Default Tramp Freighter SS Sultana - 1/350 scratchbuild

I got into a wierd headspace during Christmas break. In between self-inflicted Corner Gas marathons, I watched all of Firefly again and reread Louis L'Amour's book, West From Singapore. And, since back in August I've been in a ship mood.........

I love North Carolina. I love building battlewagons, flattops, cruisers, and so on.... but I got hold of the new Skywave IJN Ukuru-class escort. I'm telling you, if you want to appreciate the grandeur and majesty and sheer size of a BB, build a few smaller ships!

I worked a while on modernizing Revell's T2 Tanker and thought, what the hell, I'd like to build a semi-dilapidated, rusty, well-lived-in and well-traveled freighter. Smallish.... but not too small.

I couldn't find any kits of what I wanted, so I thought I'd get silly and just scratch build one. I found the plans of a 1920's era tramp steamer.... printed it off in approximately 1/350 scale.

All I ended up getting from it was the shape of the main deck and general outline of the stern shape. Other than that, nothing.

So here she is so far: SS Sultana. (I picked the name out from a 1930s book on sailing ships....)

Displacement: 900 tons
Length: 287 ft.
Beam: 40ft

Here's the hull. I layered sheet styrene - I wanted to carve and shape it. Once that was done I atached the main deck - scribed styrene for the planking.

Since these pics were taken, I cladded the forward half with .010" sheet.

Superstructure....

Trumpeter's Liberty-class ship provided the ventilators, their Fletcher-class destroyer donated the davits (which I really don't like and will be changed). The dark gray block under the bridge wings is a tool box from an Italeri 1/35 German truck, the mast is stretched sprue, and the brass came from various Gold Medal Model sets. The Bridge is actually hollow, though it's hard to tell in this pic, and the framing is a GMM vertical ladder.

More than likely it would, but I'm kinda heavy-handed and wouldn't want to damage the foam

Thank you so much fellas! Sorry for the lack of updates - been getting my prop shop in order. Things have been busy at the Cat Domicile!

Here she is. Superstructure's about completed, and painted a dingy grayish off-white as a base for the weathered final finish. Funnel and mast stays are in place - one thing I love to do is rig ships.

Hull cladding is moderately far along... I know Sultana's just an everyday freighter, but I couldn't resist giving her stem a sexy little rake.

Need your opinions on two things:

1. Cargo hold hatches: too big?

2. Armament? In L'Amour's book, Semiramis had maybe a 3" gun on the stern and small arms forward as an anti-pirate measure. What do you think? We're talking mid to late thirties here....

THANK YOU!

Try the cargo hatches a little smaller with ribbing atop, maybe the middle one not so close to the bridge.

Armament, some ships had smaller 3-lb guns on the bridge wings.

Man, Sir Feline, this is looking good!!!!!

Thank You!!!

The smaller hatches will solve another problem - lengths of the cargo booms and problems with rigging geometry...

You be a genius, sir!
