Default 1/16 scale Flying Sub

Here are a few shots of my current work-in-progress, a 1/16 (?) scale Flying Sub fiber-cast by Rick Teskey, with after-market detail parts by David Merriman.

Although Rick nailed the overall shape of the hull halves, the castings themselves were kinda rough around the edges and needed a fair amount of finessing.

The lower fins were out of alignment, so I hacked them off.

The original fore and aft hull sections were also tossed out. New parts were made from laser-cut acrylic.

The prow was reshaped with contour putty to achieve a sharper profile.

Rough test fit of the reworked hull...

I added new fins to replace the ones I hacked off, along with the raised areas in front.

The semi-forced perspective interior is completely scratched out of laser-cut plex and styrene stock, based on a set of customized working drawings by Charles Addams.

I still have to detail a couple of panels, build the seats, hook up the lights, and figure out what to do about figures, but things are starting to take shape.

I’d hoped to have the model ready for WonderFest, but at the moment that’s looking rather doubtful.

I’ll post update pix once I get the finished interior installed.

That's some phenomenal modeling there. I never saw the series, but appreciate the design. Nice work!

That is looking awesome.

This will sound silly, but having never worked anything that big before, I have to say that's a beautiful priming job aswell.

Thanks, guys.

Like I said, it's been a fun one to work on. Kinda Old School I know, but I've always loved the design.

Not familar with the subject matter but that's a clean looking build right there.

BTW which model laser cutter are you using?

I couldn't tell you, because it's not mine.

I sort of lucked out in the laser-cutting department. A local plastics distributor referred me to a guy who does the sort of thing as a side-line. His shop is in his garage, his prices are very reasonable, and he’s terrific to work with. I have no idea what these parts would have cost if I’d gone through a more conventional vendor; probably three times as much.

Default Re: 1/16 scale Flying Sub

Dear Mr Dyle,

I am new to this Forum and have joined specifically to be able to keep a close watch on your great 1/16 Flying Sub build. I have only recently been able to consider resuming my hobby of modelling ( after working as a Police Officer here in the UK for 20 years ) but would love to build this version of my favourite design form the era of Irwin Allen. Could you please advise me how I might contact Mr Teskey and Mr Merriman, if it is agreeable with them, in order that I might be able to buy similar products from them?

Best Wishes Paul Ingram

Sweet, I wonder (since I didn't read the posts and only looked at the pictures) will you be adding Lang gear, I saw a smaller scale kit for the landing gear at a hobby store
