This would allow me to just reach down and gab at some water while
I was smoothing in the clay, any excess water would just run off back into
the tub.

Then it's just a matter of sculpting in the clay into the cross sections.
I tried to let the clay be a bit higher that the cross sections and sand later.

When I was left with the last section that was housing the mount, it was removed and that section was filled.
When you talk about Clay.. what clay type did you use? I assume you are using something like Sculpy..

So at around 2 feet in length do you know what scale that works out to? Or is this one of those ships that has size controversies around it? Curious for if/when it comes to plopping a pilot into it.

No nothing like Sculpy its called Apoxie Sculpt Made by a company
called Aves here is a link. They have another type of clay
on the site called "Fix It" I just ordered 6lbs of that because
it's good up to 500deg. Where the regular Apoxie sculpt
is only around 300deg

i

Really have no idea i started this thing out from
a picture and just decided i would like it around
that size. I never looked at any actual numbers on
it, also it's at the max for my former that was another
reason for the decision on length.

Ok got some clay and finally got back to this thing,
this is the "fit it" from Aves and a little different color,
it's good up to 500deg which was the big draw for me.
The regular Apoxie sculpt is around 350 deg.

if they could make this with a quicker hardening time
i would love it even more 24 hrs is a litle rough for me!
I would prefer t be sanding it in a couple hrs.

looking very sharp 3DB! As you say, 24 hours to cure does sound excessive.

they do make something like that. Its called bondo. Aves is a pretty expensive route to go for making a master pattern like that.

Bondo is nothing like this, they are two totally
different mediums. The clay has 100% zero shrinkage
it's toolable when set, you can drill it, tap it, thread it, lathe it,
it even sets up under water and its good up to 500deg. Most importantly its non toxic unlike
Bondo that shit will kill you! Because its non toxic i can use it all
year round, which is nice in the winter months. What little clay
it needs I still wouldnt skim it with Bondo, every time you slap
350deg styrene over that stuff it starts to shrink and it ends up
leaving low spots on your pattern, because it melts and ends up
stuck to the part you just formed on the underside. I cant stand
trying to fix patterns between pulls! LOL

Maybe the density foams are better and surley faster
but not sure about price, and how well they hold up
under heat? That would be my next choice over Apoxie sculpt.

I was lookig at the link Hackor provided of a build
of the geonosian fighter, and see a huge difference
in the roundness at the rear. I only used this photo
as reference so this is the reason for my shape.

Thinking mine is probably wrong.....but i like the shape better
on mine at the rear!LOL

Default Re: Geonosian Fighter Scratch-build

Ok guys i ordered chicken and got ribs!
This is not a BBQ so ribs are not good.......
but i ended up with plenty! The problem is the
difference in hardness between the two materials,
clay VS 3mm styrene. The styrene is softer i didnt
want to glaze it with clay or Bondo.....so i decided
to bring down the cross sections and keel line. i used
a small tool and just scraped the material away. Took about
45 min then i just added in the clay in all the grooves, this
allowed me to sand clay across clay instaed of clay across
styrene.
