Default "Last Crusade" 1/35 Mark VIII tank, scratchbuild

Hi all,
Been awhile since I've poked around here, and though it was time I got back to it.
I've been posting this on The RPF, and there's some cool history behind the tanks built for the film, as well as my adventure getting her photographed.

I've been trying to get this thing built for a long time, and I've been squaking about building it for nearly ten years. After a recent trip to Walt Disney World, where the large prop sits (rotting away), 200 photos, and a few measurements later, I've finally got this thing started.

One of the things that kept me from building it. was how big it was in 1/35. I just didn't buy it. Well, the measurements of the real deal confirmed it, and you'll see a pic in there witha 1/35 Stuart next to it, just to give you and idea!!

Here's some pics! Enjoy!!

Mate that is awesome! Any chance this will be a kit? I would be up for one! There is a fantastic article in the July/August and September/October 2008 issue of AFV Modeler on this Steel Beast.

Cheers, Chris

I've been building her with kitting in mind, but she's just so damn big! The biggest hrudle would be getting photoetch made for some parts, and the Hessian camo nets would have to be made by the builder. But everything else could be cast. I'll think about it more as I build :eep!

Definatly going to check out that article! Thought I was the only one who's ever tackeld this thing!!

The ones at Disney World are kept just outside the exit to the Indiana Jones Stunt Spectacular. Also there is a one of the troop trucks, and the Citreon car used during the Plane chase and escape. Hiding in the waiting que is the effects cockpit of the Pilatus fighter. They are ALL in bad, bad shape.

They used to have the "stunt tank" on display, which was the upper half sitting on a truck frame, but this hasn't been seen for some time. I want to believe it's in storage, but I'm not sure. Firefoxm31 will tell you, they don't throw much away at Disney

I'm hung up right now on a few details, but a trip to the hobby shop next week should make things allright. I think I'm gonna move onto the sides. More to come!

Heh heh . . .

So I've got all of the hard stowage and tools scratched and ready. I cast a few up and planted them on the side to see the final effect. I'm very, very pleased, although I've laid about six layers of primer on this poor model. Not a big deal, because the first attempt has some wonky edges and angles, and some bad joins and the like that are not fit for reproduction, so I'm taking the day, and completely rebuilding the model. Shouldn't take me long, you know . . . until I rivet the thing. But I have some things in mind to recreate the rough texture of the steel and paint, so a redo has been part of the plan for a while. May start the soft stowage later next week.

If you're interested in one of these tanks, look for a preorder around the end of January.
