Default My 1/32 scale Firefox progress

I'm a Long time fan of this one....you could say this is my Nautilus of the sky...those that know me know what I mean by this...lol. This project has been a long project, but things are starting to speed up now...
So as to not pile it on all at once I'll make lots of seperate posts to this thread to catch everyone up to speed....if that's ok ...I 've been watching projects on here a while now and figured it's high time I show some of mine...so here goes..

Starting with the basic pieces of the plane and working from there.

5D.jpg shows all the parts laid out. They were carved from mahogany...tough to get symetry considering I have a handicap of having only one good eye.
top, side, front, rear and bottom jpg's show first coat of many for primer to see the mistakes there were alot, but this was still roughing the shape.

a little refining here. at this stage it's looking much more like the Firefox..still lots to go, but this shows a general test fit of all parts, before separating em for more building and detailing.

This was about the point I got a hold of some much needed reference....so...things started to change... namely the nose..several times actually until I was satisfied

That is one Sierra-Hotel bird!
PLEASE provide steady up-dates!

I'd like to know how you're going to replicate the paint scheme. To me it always looked
like varying tones of black, metallic black, and darkened gun metal.

rebuilding the nose of the plane, first in styrene card, then fairing in to finish facets... now she looks like the Firefox I remember.

Here I've scratchbuilt the rear engine nozzel shroud masters, then faired them in for final finish. Lastly, revised the vertical stabilizer, she was the wrong shape and contour and needed more surface area added...now it's right

working on the wingtips getting the angle just right then breaking em apart to finish em. fixed the interface of the wing root leading edge too. started to work on details at this point. Ron H did the 3d model for the exhaust nozzels per my cads and then unfolded the the entire nozzel so I could add the intricate pattern to it in autocad. Once this was done I had it along with various other details photo-etched, same with the instrument panel which I hand built... the panel is accurate to the full scale film mockup. It took a lot of research and freezing of the VHS tape, then later screencaps from the dvd(tons better ref there)

thank you for the compliments,

here's where I started adding details and recess masks to the plane. once these were done, I sprayed the whole thing with primer, sanded away the paint from the tape, and gently removed the masks. This created the recessed areas to receive the details. next, the mold layup.

ok, decision time was here. I had to figure out how to get hollow parts for the new masters from this solid wood master. So, after talking a fellow friend and modeler Chris (Zactoman, the gentleman doing the 1/32 scale YF-23). I decided to do basic molds, get the basic shapes, then go back in and and make these new resin halves the new masters to finalize the details. so here i show the stage 1 mold process. First I laid up the Firefox fuselage in clay, created the registration keys with extensive consultation/assistance from Tom G, also a member of this board. After all this was finalized I poured the rtv mold.

now the fun part began.....to get the hollow halves, I had to create a barrier to get a wall thickness and create a cavity for the resin to fill. This should , in theory, get me a uniform wall thickness much like an injection molded model kit. To accomplish this I used .100 thick Sheet Wax, laying it in the cavity of the molds, claying open areas and seams to ensure no leaks. Once this was done, I could pour the final "cover" for the rtv mold for each half...to date I've only gotton the bottom half casted, but I chose to make the hardest portion first, just gotta finish up the top of the fueslage mold now, then can cast these for the new masters. this pretty much catches up to where I am now on the project. I'm awaiting more rtv to finish the top rtv "cover" for casting upper portions.

WOW - that is really good work!

I fell deeply in love with this plane back in 1981, and collected lobby cards, magazine articles, posters and all kinds of stuff - basically anything that had a picture of the plane - so I consider myself a bit of an expert on this subject. Your model looks right on target to me - the proportions and shapes look just like the original. Please keep the updates coming!

Andrew

I remember this project from a while back. Excellent work and thank you for all of the pics documenting all that you have done in each step. It's sure to be a fine kit. Good luck on the rest and keep posting!
