Default Re: New Carriers

The link doesn't seem to be working right now so i'm not sure whats being shown.
Anyway, i got a book on US Aircraft carriers since 1948 and it was published back in 2000.It shows pictures of what may have been planned as the next generations of Flat tops.
2008 was to be a CVN-77(a modified CVN-76)
Something similar to the pic above with the island being moved to the starboard aft end of the boat.Very sleek and very futuristic looking
2013 was to be the CVN-78 and 2018 CVN-79.
This was,or is planned to be a totally new boat.
Anyone know anything about these boats and if they are still planned or not?

Smile Re: New Carriers

Hi Phil. Not sure if this link will be any better for you, and below is the write up: Pretty cool. http://www.gizmag.com/northrop-grumm...0-years/10017/

"September 17, 2008 The tenth and final nuclear-powered Nimitz-class supercarrier, George H. W. Bush, enters service in 2009, but the next-generation is on its way. The Gerald R. Ford CVN 78 is the first ship in the first new carrier class in over 40 years. Northrop Grumman has received a $5.1 billion, seven-year contract for construction of the CVN 78, which is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy in 2015.

Northrop Grumman began advance construction of the Gerald R Ford in 2005, under a separate $2.7 billion contract. Roughly one third of the ship’s 1,200 structural units are currently under construction, with the keel scheduled to be laid in 2009. The Navy is expected to build 11 of the carriers, each worth approximately $8 billion, continuing construction into 2058.

The Gerald R Ford class carriers will have a larger flight deck, improved weapons handling, a smaller island, a new Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System, an Advanced Arresting Gear, and a new A1B nuclear propulsion and electricity generation system. The technological advancements in the Ford design result in a 25% increase in sortie generation, a 25% reduction in necessary manpower, a threefold increase in electrical generating capacity, improved self defense capability, increased launch/recovery capability, increased ability to incorporate future upgrades, and increased operational availability.

By changing the layout of the flight deck, and pushing back the island, the carrier minimizes aircraft movements and decreases the workload for personnel. The centralized re-arming location, and the use of robots to move ordnance, also boosts efficiency and allows aircraft to re-arm in “minutes instead of hours.”

The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launching System (EMALS) has a higher level of control than the steam-powered catapults employed by Nimitz-class carriers. EMALS can launch heavier and lighter craft, making it compatible with UAVs. EMALS is more efficient, smaller lighter, more powerful, easier to control, and places less stress on airframes by gradually increasing the aircraft’s speed. UAV integration is also made possible by the Advanced Arresting Gear System, which uses electromagnetism, rather than hydraulics, to capture aircraft.

The inability of current aircraft carriers to effectively handle UAVs is a reminder of the need to plan for technological advancement. While the USS Enterprise, (the ship being replaced by the Ford), is still serving 50 years after it was laid down, it is increasingly unable to adapt to upgraded systems. With currently planned systems on the CVN 78 consuming only half of its generated power, the ship is well prepared to incorporate future energy-hungry systems such laser guns, dynamic armor, and new tracking devices."

Design life is about 50 years give or take.

Carriers already have armor... in the form of Kevlar and areas where the steel is thicker. It's mostly ballistic armor. The glass on the tower is ballistic glass, meaning bulletproof and somewhat explosion-resistant.

CVN-78 IS a new class, but the basic hull is still a Nimitz. The futuristic designs you saw, Wombat, are concepts from the CVNX or CVN-21 program, on which CVN-78 is based.

Dynamic shields might be something like ionizing the hull plating on NX-01. It sounds like some kind of electromagnetic process, but I might be wrong.

Thanks for posting that Drew, that new link did work for me as well!
That sure will be a bad ass boat, never had the pleasure of seeing a flat top yet, they're to big to bring into Adelaide's ports,so when those Nimitz carriers have done there Australian port cruises they always bypass us!!

Bob,looking at my book again these were early artist drawings of CVN-77.
They looked pretty cool!!

Here's 77 post-launch and being taken to Newport News' Outfitting Quay. Look how high she's riding in the water. That's because she's only about 65% complete.

As you can see, she's very very similar to the Reagan. A couple of the more noticeable changes to 76 and 77 are the presence of 3 arresting wires vice 4 and the angle deck is offset a few more degrees to port which gives an extra 5 feet of width... just enough where simultaneous launches and recoveries are now fully possible.

Another change is the longer Island which incorporates an indoor weapons elevator and staging area aft. This is something new first done with Reagan.

Me? I served on the FIRST two ships in the class... and they were just finished being broken in at the time. Ike was 13 years old when I first served aboard and Nimitz was 18. Yep... a carrier isn't really broken in until it has a few deployments and yard periods in its active commission record!

Damn cool Bob and Phil! They used to come into Hong Kong regularly. They still do, but not as often. In fact, they were here so much that they were put in the simulator software. With about a 30 - 40 knot head wind, you can land a "light" 777, or even a 747. You'd never get it off though!

It never took us Hrs to rearm..Our crew could have a sortie (4/5 aircraft) in 10-15 mins. and the same could be said about the rest of the squads except A-6's. I kind of take offense to that statement..

^ It was written by paper pushers and yard engineers to sell the new design. It'll just mean fewer Ordies humpin' bullets and bombs on turnarounds... in theory.
