Frackin' A!

What the world needs right now is another grand adventure to inspire and bring us all together again. Man, those were the days, even though I was only a wee lad. I used to devour everything space-related when I was a kid. Still do.

Heck, you should have seen my soft-Lego Thunderbirds Zero-X and rocket cakes Mum used to make for my birthday parties!

Sadly it isn't going to happen. When looking back at that time there was so many cool things going on. None of them had to do with Vietnam, hippies or rock n roll. But when people talk about it one would assume that's all that went on. It's really sad, we went to the moon but Jimi Hendrix was far more important.

Yes it is. The commercialization of the industry will make it far more popular and attainable then anyone ever imagined. Flying was only a thing for the super rich at one time. Look at it now. Traveling into and through space will be like flying on planes by 2050. The current meaning of word "Astronaut" will become a thing of the past.

If they can figure out how to make it profitable it will be a DotCom type revolution.

By 2050?
Not if this current industry leaders have their way.
By the time NASA gets back to the moon, Rutan, Branson, Allen and friends will be waiting to shake the astronauts hands when they get there. (At least I hope.)

The more I think about it, I don't think NASA will end up doing much with Orion. Part of my thinking on this is remember how the shuttle was sold. It never lived up to expectations, and took the lives of fourteen astronauts. Where was the weekly(or at least monthly) flights? Didn't happen, after all NASA is a government agency they don't have to produce anything but paperwork.

It was a real shame how Nixon nixed NASA, Braun and his team were ready to crank out Saturn V's. Doing all kinds of missions, including a manned lunar base, space stations, and a landing on Mars. Instead what do we get all sorts of social programs, far outspending anything the military could. I know giving people money will never help anybody, it will only make things worse. But give people vision, something to look forward to, will inspire many to go beyond what they think is possible. DR. Von Braun and his team did that very thing, what most considered impossible.

That's my point. The commercial sector will far outdo anything government run programs can or could have done. I don't think it will be Virgin Galactic by any means but they seem to be a good metaphor for the industry.

So far VG is way out front, nobody else has gotten that far. The engine explosion a while back is the only thing that slowed them down.

Sad truth about Apollo was the government thew enough money at it. And they had capable people, which really thinned out at the time of the shuttle's development. Which showed what happened when the money dried up.

No worries Phil, thought you might be interested.

I'll check out the doco tonight. I've been home today nursing some bruised ribs from an accident at work on Friday, so have been enjoying playing with my gadgets. Are you free this weekend? I want to see that whoppin' great Sat V of yours!

I'm still looking for my finished Saturn V pics on my backup DVD's but here is a presentation I gave at the IMPS Nationals in '05 which might be interesting to some of you guys.

Excellent tutorial on the Saturn V - Looking forward to seeing more on the subject. It would appear from the photos that you replaced the CSM and the LEM Cover ?

I bought a resin replacement for the CSM/SLA, which includes a white metal LES.

Those kits are difficult to paint, due to the corrugations on the interstage and intertank sections.
