BTW- EXCELLENT progress to all who've shared! Keep the pics coming- I'm enjoying seeing how you're all tackling your versions!

Ok, so my masking-fu was weak and I fell back to using the decals. I decided that being stressed out over masking those "dotted lines" on the engines wasn't worth it.

Wings with Micro Sol trying to snug down those stripes...

Body application:

Decal soaking device:

I brushed Future on each surface before hand, which was my first use of the bottle I bought 5 years ago. (No need to rush into anything!) I discovered that Future runs worse than paint, so now I have Future runs on everything. I believe that some Windex will take care of it though.

This is getting me back in practice!

NEXT: My adventures with my airbrush (bought in 2005 at the Atlanta Nats and never used since!)

Great progress Refit1701, I'll tell you what if i was doing a OOB build of the Viper i sure would have used the decals. I know what you mean about the future i did the same thing when i first tried it thats when i found out airbrushing it works better. I like your decal tray i need to find one of those.

Fantastic work with the salt. That paint job looks spot-on.
Your build looks fantastic so far.
Slow down a bit and let us catch up.

Packrat
Your paint job looks great. I really like the detail work on the bottom.

Refit1701
Your decals are coming along. Ive never been good at large decals so Ill probably paint my stripes on.
Great job.

Thanks Duck....thats a trick that could definatly come in handy

Thank you dbhs

Refit...Let me know how well the Micro Sol works on these decals. I need to get a bottle anyway, but these decales seem a tad thicker than most.

I can identify with your pain....I've got kids running around, including a 4 year old who wants to "help". My wife works nights so I am the babysitter during the week.

It makes is difficult to sneak away....

OK guys, more cell phone photos (I really need to get a good
digital camera ).

The concept here is to back-date/reverse engineer the kit design.
I've eliminated the surface greebles, launch rails, shortened the fuselage
and intakes, still covering the plumbing, and trying to contour and blend all
the fuselage/body components into a smooth,flowing shape.

Pic #1: Longer, broader wing optimized for atmospheric maneuverability.Scribed in panel
lines, and ammo/gun bays.Cannons are mounted at the wing roots.

Pic #2: Back dated canopy. With less advanced sensors, pilots needed more use of the
"MK1 Eye Ball".Sanded/buffed off all frame detail.Replaced the canopy frame with EVERGREEN
plastic strip.

Pics #s 3+4: Overall shape with lots of filling, scribing, shaping, and re-contouring yet to come!

My build is called: THE LAST OF THE "OLD GUARD".

Great work on all the builds guys!WONDERFUL pieces of work!

U-boater.....
I have that feeling that this is going to look pretty sweet when it's done.

Pegas....
Start eating more junk food. Seems to be working fairly well for me
Hope ya feel better

Well...
Mine is basically done
I'm not entirly happy with the way the guns came out, so they are only temporarily installed. And I'm thinking I still might do a tad more detail painting. I'll sleep on it a bit and see what happens.
I still need to paint the pilots face yet and add the RI decals then dull-coat the works. But for now......

I have the pics on photobucket, but here's two for ya.
