View Full Version : Prop Displaying Quirks - and showoff - (lots of PICS!)

Heya! I noticed this morning that I have some odd prop displaying quirks. I like to have little miniatures of my ships next to the studio scale ones. It probably detracts from the models themselves, but I think it's "cute." I was wondering, does anyone else have displaying quirks they like to share?

Thanks Rel, Kuhn, Cat, and Boxster.
Praise coming from you guys means a lot. Yes, I do collect a little of everything. Props are just a lot of fun, and given my busy schedule (real estate management during the day, and law school at night) I need things to de-stress myself. Ebay, RPF and the Resin Illuminati really help.
If anyone sees anything interesting... and wants some close up pictures I'd be happy to post some up.
My big interests are:
Airwolf
Knight Rider
Star Trek
Star Wars
Batman
Battlestar Galactica
Godzilla - came from my fiance
Some things that are in the works and (hopefully) will be coming soon:
1) Batman Forever sonar armor full suit
2) Batman Begins full suit
3) Master Chief armor - full suit (which I regret now, cuz the hype is over)
4) Blade Bust - being painted now (which I still need to pay for.. sorry man! i didn't forget!)
5) MIB neuralyzer (agent J version)- shipping
6) Minority Report screenused props: sick stick, and spider - shipping
7) 40" enterprise e - Rel
8) 40" enterprise d - you guys see Rel's work.. it's moving along again! WOo HOO!
9) Studio Scale Batwing - (paul and Rel)
10) Hyperdyne ghostbusters sound kit to go with the proton pack - which I will wire up
11) ...and i'm building a computer - one that has a nice knight rider voice box built into it. (only as a stop gap before I get the full car.. heh heh)
All this stuff, and I literally only spend 15 minutes a day down in my basement. I have a 4 foot iguana (located behind robocop) and she is toilet trained. Every morning I put her in the shower to drink water and poop and that's when I get everything done
I'll keep you guys posted. =) It should be a fun year.
more pics! - just for fun

“Out of Time” - It’s pretty funny that your toilet is Tie Fighter Blue! Hahahhaha – Imagine if your toilet could talk….. it would probably quote Han Solo.. “THAT”S NO MOON!....” hahaha
Rider – You definitely need to see a doctor…. Well it depends, how deep is the dent? Or is it just like a little exhaust port?
Robn1- Thank you for that Pic! I always felt so strange putting the little ship there, but now that I’ve seen the Smithsonian do it, I’m definitely going to continue with the trend.
Boxster - Yup, I'm a Batman fan in general, I'll keep you posted on any begins props that come in. =)

01-11-2008, 01:12 PM
" CAPT Pike-ARD "... I love it.
Actually, a chest-dummy with the uniform top, and no arms, with the head would work. It would then be a 'bust' at 1:1 scale.
ave4uevoli
01-11-2008, 01:25 PM
Pike-Ard! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHa....
For a while Darth vader was holding his head.. then Captain Picard was wearing the robocop helmet.. so he became robo-cap.... or robo-picard...
I dunno. What I really wanted to do was try and modify my standard mannequins so that picard would be holding up 1-2 fingers - like he always does right before he says "engage"
Like so: http://nicky_smith.tripod.com/stgen4.jpg
I've seen pictures of people heavily modifying their mannequins... but I haven't figured out how to do that.. nor do I have the time.
Peagis: the link to the forum is: http://405th.com/forums/
he's one of the forum leaders.. so you can see his screen name "Sean Bradley" under all the categories.
I've been out of touch with that forum for a month or so.. but I have heard the story about most of the buildings and people who offer armor there.. so let me know if you need more help.

Afterwards - when bruce was making his batman suit he painted over the gauntlets - and he made them smooth.

Haven't updated in a while.. Lately, I've started getting into lifesized busts. It's a whole new world, and it's going to, yet again, take up a lot of my time if I want to do it right. I blame Simmon M. for this - It was his pictures in the junkyard, and in various other places that really showed me how nice these life sized busts can be.... Hear that Si?!?! It's all your fault! HAHA
so I started with a blade bust - by howard S. painted by streetjudge79 (steve)

Massive anubis helmet from GB_Dan done by Dymerski and howard S. (This thing is absolutely amazing and yes.. that's one of the few props to make it into the living room it's that amazing)

http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h260/ave4uevoli/CIMG0618.jpg
I finished my pretty damn accurate Ghostbusters proton pack - Lights, sounds, blood, sweat, tears... y'know the usual. I replaced most of the LED's with super duper bright ones so they'll blind you even in the video. (The original LED's were only super bright ones =P)
video can be found here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpZrzPRPNCs
IT"S HARD TO SEE BUT CLICK THE LINK ABOVE! IT"S FUN! and it's fairly rare (i think) to see proton packs that have the right colored LED's and stuff, and that make the right sounds. There are a lot of variants out there with random red led's instead of blue on ebay... at least these lights are all the right colors.
Plus: screen used minority report sick stick and spider.
http://i66.photobucket.com/albums/h260/ave4uevoli/CIMG0381.jpg
Oh and a screen used Blade sword - Metal blade. The amazing display case was made by "screenused.com"

Bloody hell! They are great. That Chris Reeve one is just awesome - you've doen him proud. (Blade is fantastic too)
You know, that Anubis head (I'm assuming SG1?) is shit hot (awesome!) too. Is that scratch built or a kit? You mention some names there, do they have a web site or something?
ave4uevoli
03-09-2008, 03:53 PM
Anubis is actually from the movie Stargate. I don't know if the anubis helmet ever made it into the sg1 series. Dean dymerski - made this from the original molds. I believe Howard S. either helped him - or painted it for him.. the details there are not clear to me.
Howard S. has a website that can be found here: http://www.howardsstudios.com/
Dymerski has a bunch of websites - but he can be found on the RPF - if you do a quick search you'll find him.
No, I definitely did not paint this myself - Unless it's paint by numbers.. i'd probably screw it up.
Thanks!

Hey Marc,
Thanks for the nice comment.. I have a full sized halo suit coming - a few batman suits coming- those really massive star trek enterprises that rel's building are also on the list - and a few other things in the pipeline. (most of my collection is on page 1 of this thread.. some on page 3.. and the new stuff on page 5)
I am slowing down in acquiring stuff - I only started collecting in May 2005 - (seriously, my basement was completely empty in 2005) - so I would like to slow down a bit, and take my time to round out the collections I have now, and perhaps fix certain lifesized props that I just "threw" onto standard mannequins.
By the way - I LOVE your battlestar galactica and Star Destroyer- really really really impressive stuff sir!

Papa Smurf - post some pics!!.. I admit I got a little carried away with my pictures. .I started using this thread as my own little photo album. But post pics. I'm sure everyone will love to see your stuff...
That goes for everyone else too - post something.. post anything... everyone has a different "style" of displaying props and everyone's entire collection has a different feel... It's nice to see other people's collections to get ideas and/or give ideas to people who are unsure about how to display something - or newbies in prop collecting an idea of how even displaying props takes a really long time.. and a lot of planning.
Y'know a few months ago - I was having trouble figuring out how to make certain items "pop" in my collection - after a while - it just started to look like a big room of clutter... and when looking at other people's displays.. I realized... "Pedestals! that's what I need.. Pedestals... ".... and that's what I got.. not only did it utilize more space in my prop room - it accentuated certain items - and it added "breaks" in the room so everything didn't look like a giant mess.
Either way - POST PICS! =)

OK dude, I have some nice props, but it's all stuffed in my bedroom, wish I had a bigger house to have an actual "Prop Room" like you have. I'll try and get some pics posted sometime soon, maybe today or tomorrow. And yes, Pedestals make a HUGE difference in presentation. That's why all my builds have one, just makes the display that much better. Last Pacific Creations, my buddy Glenn, makes Superb Bases and Pedestals. You should contact him if you want top of the line ones, made up to whatever size or shape you want. In my book, he's the best in that field. Marvelous stuff.
Here's a link to the "Bases" page on my product website. Not trying to sell anything here, just showing his work and superb quality, just scroll down past the "Alien Terrain Diorama" Bases, and check out what Last Pacific makes for me. His beveled cuts, top quality Lexan, and precision oriented work are simply unreal.

OK, as promised, here's some of my collection. I may have to do this in more than one post, not sure how many pics I can post before I exceed the limit. These are shots taken in my collection room, in my office area, and in the Studio I build in. I'm a lousy housekeeper, and photographer, so forgive the dust, or fuzzyness, in some shots. It really doesn't compare to the great way ave4uevoli has his displayed, but there are some excellent reproductions in these pictures, some of my work, and some real Movie used props, with pedigree and certificates of authenticity. I'm not going to list them all, but some of you will know which are which. I'm just doing this for fun, and to share in this most interesting thread, as I am curious what other member's collections look like as well. Hope you enjoy these as much as I've enjoyed collecting them over the years. When we build an addition to the House, I plan on having a display room, so I can get larger scale items.

Thanks John! Yeah, my little collection puts a smile on my face sometimes. These are the kind of "toys" we all dreamed of as a kid, but they didn't exist then! Maybe that's one of the reasons I make them for other people, as an occupation, kind of like making small dreams come true. There's so many other items I want, but until I have a bigger display room, I have to control my "Collectors Impulses". Glad you enjoyed the pics! :)
 WOW! It's interesting to see what's worthy of the Papa! Excellent!!

Nice stuff Papa Smurf!
I have small children, and as such have to take my toys to work....

Many thanks Scorpius and 777, it's nowhere near as impressive as Thomas's collection, but I'm happy with the items I've managed to accumulate in a small room. OK guys, now let's see your stuff! I'm sure you two have some very cool items to show as well.
Is that a "Ravin"? What is that from - looks cool.

Do you mean the Winged "Beastie"? No, it's a 36 inch Wingspan "Vermithtrax", the one from the film "Dragon Slayer", pricey kit and only 500 in existence. Made that one for a client, it's actually sold, but this Doctor is too busy to come by and pick it up, so "There she waits".
There's a lot of pics of that one on the Gallery page, on the Kit Factory site, shoot over and check it out. It's a very nice build, done per reference of the film prop.
I will miss that one when it's finally picked up. Love Dragons and other mythical critters.

Great build up on the Vermithrax.
I still sell them if anyone is interested and they are not limited. Still have them in stock.

Yes BC, after I bought it off MIM, I found your site had it listed for a hundred bucks less! I won't make that error again. Your prices are much more reasonable, and your selection is top-notch stuff. Kudos on your site BTW, been on my "Favorites" since I discovered it. Really, just marvelous stuff there George.
Peagis, I believe that's a Tiger I, or II, in a "Winter" weathering style. Don't remember the scale, 1/47th or something close to that. It's been up on my Studio Cabinets for many years now. I think it was a Tamiya, but really not sure, Papa Smurf is getting old, can't remember shit anymore, sorry.
Thanks to both of you for your very kind comments. :)
I really would like other members to "show their stuff", I think it would be cool to see what all you guys have displayed, in your collection. Don't be shy, just don't give out a map, to your house's location, to the local robbers and thieves.

Oh! An Apprentice made that for me, as a Christmas present, cool little 'bot! It's one of the kits from Bandai's "Gundam Mobile Suits" line. That one is the MS-18E Kampfer, in 1/144th Scale. I've not built any of these kits, so I didn't quite get the question, as I'm not very familliar with their names or the terminology.
I was really pleased at this gift, Chris is really now my ex-apprentice, he moved on to fine arts in College, and no longer can devote time to model making. He is a very talented artist in many Medias. I thought you meant like a "Kampfwagen" style Tank, which the Tiger is not, sorry. See, senility is setting in as we speak, sucks getting old.

Oh please - don't be so modest! Your collection is great. I love the way you've displayed your stuff. As you know, it's difficult when you have a lot of small items..but you've displayed them very well. Plus, you have a very nice and extensive master replicas star trek phaser/disruptor collection. I love it!
Your Han Solo Blaster stood out as well - with the master replicas print behind it. I've always wanted to do that with my collection but I don't have the room. Things look great when you have a blueprint or some cool picture of the prop in use behind the item. It just looks more "official"
It seems like we have similar tastes too. Star Wars, Star Trek, robots, robocop, bsg, lost in space and sci fi in general. Your collection is great. I especially like how you have a lot of star trek models hanging from the ceiling. That's a very impressive lost in space robot. It's a great size too - The life size one, for me, is just too large.. but yours is 3-4 feet high(?) yea.. that's a great scale.
very nice papa smurf! Thanks for sharing.
anyone else?

Seriously folks, this could be an awesome thread, if members with collections, shared some pics. I'm sure almost every RI member has some sort of collection of treasured items, to post here for all to enjoy.

And... the Bungalows of the Arts and Crafts Movement is my favorite residential architectural style. One day I shall have a bungalow of my own...

I was thinkin' it might be Ravin from Tomb Raider, but you're right, could be from a few different movies. 'Ravin' is generally considered the bad guy from the Hindu perspective (with all the cool kick arse swords). Funnily enough, I can't seem to find any info on the web about him!

Hi, no, I mean this one: 7784
That's a Ray Harryhausen replica from "Sinbad", the old movie version. I bought that a while back, it's supposed to be "Kali" I believe.
