View Full Version : 1/24 B-Wing. A super slow build. Now painting the V2! DONE!

Well, I've had some downtime on pulling the B-wing kits due to either needing molds or resin, so I started getting parts ready for my own builds during that downtime. I plan on slowly getting more parts ready for my build and building this slowly while I am waiting for resin to set.
No worries to the guys that are waiting for kits. The parts that I am working on for myself are either from parts that are finished being pulled for this kit, or seconds that I would rather throw in the trash than send to you guys.
First up was the little guns (I think that they are guns) that go on the wings. The resin parts are fine, but with this kit being so big I figured that I would try my hand at scratch building them out of metal and styrene (I have never scratched before). Here's what I came up with:
They are pretty much the proper size. I will cut them to the proper length sometime this week.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0223.jpg
I like that they have the holes in the front. To me, it makes it look more "real". I could have just drilled holes in the resin parts, but I like this better.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0225.jpg
The styrene that I picked up was just about the same size (I eyeballed it), but I like how the lower part turned out. Instead of getting a smaller size for the middle strip, I'm going to keep it this way.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0228.jpg
Second up is the guns for the front of the cockpit. I do not have that mold, so I only had pictures from the build instructions and two "seconds parts" to go off off. Since I liked how the small guns came out, I figured that I would try my hand at these as well.
The pictures of this part in the build instructions and the "second parts" that I have were a bit different on a few of the tips, so I went with the instructions pic to make the tips that you see in brass. I have to attach it to the styrene strip still, so these parts are just laid out in front of the strip that I am going to attatch them to.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0236.jpg
btw - I've sanded these metal parts so the paint and glue (when I attatch the styrene parts to it) have something to grab on to. That is why they look so dirty.
I plan on hitting the metal parts with some self etching primer before I attatch them to the styrene, then prime the parts again after everything is attatched.
Next is this part: As you can sort of see on the top of the pic, this part is a "second". The top of the part had some really big air holes (voids) that I am fixing, and the mold didn't line up properly along the top when the part was being pulled, but the sides were good, so I figures, what the hay.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0241.jpg
The more I looked at this part, the more I wanted to make the details crisper so I grabbed my pin vise/pin push (whatever it's called) and went to town.
Before:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0244.jpg
After:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0245.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0246.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0247.jpg
The reworked holes that I put in may be a bit too deep, but I figure when you add paint, they will look just fine.
So now I'm thinking about rescribing it too since I want it to look crisper, but I'm horrible at that so I'm going back and forth in my head about it. I will most likely end up doing it but I'm just putting it off. I think that I should fix the voids before I get too far into this part. I would hate to put in a bunch of work to find out that the part is unsavable.
Well, that all the pics that I have so that's all for now.
Like I said, a SLOW build.

A slow build....
But it's always the little added details that
add to the finished product.;)
Take your time.I'm sure it'll be worth it!:D
Looks good (to me) so far.Like the work
you've done with the rivet detail.

Well, between studying, and pulling some parts for the kits, I didn't do much this weekend on this build. I got a few parts filled, sanded and primed. These parts all had holes in the back, which nobody would ever see, but I figure that I would fill them anyway. It didn't take very long. I needed the practice since I haven't put anything made of resin together for awhile. I've also never done a resin model before so I figure the more practice I get better.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0280.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0276.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0285.jpg
I also scratched the big gun on the lower wing. I used the part from the kit to as a reference for the length, and all the reference that everybody sent me (thanks guys :notworthy:) for the details. Here it is next to the one that is going to be in the kit:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0289.jpg
And here it is placed inside the part that is will be attatched to:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0291.jpg
I'm pretty happy with the gun as I've never worked with styrene tubing before. I tried to keep it strong as possible, hence the brass, and also light at the same time, the styrene.
Well that's all I have for now.

Outstanding work!! That looks GREAT!!:D
Thanks. :-)
For those waiting for a kit, I've updated the Vendor thread.
Now on to my latest small update.
Since I want to light this up, I've ordered LEDs and Fiber Optics that should be here this week, so I had to start making room for them.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0303-1.jpg
There is a hollow brass tube running through this part. I figure that I can run the fiber optics through it.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0310.jpg
I'm not sure what I'm going to do here. I do not like how the insides of these look so I'm either thinking of rotocasting these parts, or adding something to the inside to make it look better.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0318-1.jpg
Then I scratched another one of the lower guns. I didn't think that the one that came with the kit was long enough when compared to the pics, so I made it longer and added a few more details to it.

Okay, I haven't updated this in two weeks, but I have gotten some work done. It's a bit frustrating since I don't have all the parts, but maybe it's a blessing at the same time since I can pay more attention to the parts that I do have.
One side of the main wing is rescribed and rivet holes are redone. A lot of the scribed lines did not exist on the part so I overcame the fear of my shitty scribing skills and went to town. I also added a few pieces of styrene for detail. Now I just have to turn it over and do the other side and perhaps go to my local hobby store yet again for some styrene tubing.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0356.jpg
I started on the last of the lower guns by cannibalizing a bad pull from a s-foil gun. I mixed it with some metal and I think I have a good start to this gun.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0339-1.jpg
I also restarted on the small guns (maybe they are sensors) for the s-foils. Thanks to all the reference people linked me to, I figured that I needed to so these from scratch. I still need to add more details, but so far, they look good to me.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0336-1.jpg
I think that I solved my "ugly insides" problem for the engines. Rotocasting. It's looks better to me and I was able to rotocast this mold while using it as a dump mold, so no resin lost. :-)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0365.jpg
Rear cone from the upper section of the ship. I used what I believe is the "Guy Cowen" method of scribing the three lines in it. :notworthy:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0369-1.jpg
I finally finished the big lower gun that I started building.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0376.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0377.jpg
Drilled some holes for wiring to go through.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0328-1.jpg
I worked on the gun mounts for the s-foils. I wanted to keep the fronts to them proportionate to the rest of the mount, so I didn't shave too much off.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0379.jpg
A few examples next to original pulls.

Thanks for the kind words.
So, I'm at a standstill on the kits so I decided to get some building done.
Here is the secondary wing. It's rescribed and the rivet holes have been redone (first post of this thread) and I added some of the other parts to it. I finally glued some parts together. LOL
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0410.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0411.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0412.jpg
I fixed this part and got it ready for mounting on the secondary wing. I added some brass rods to strengthen the connection up.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0415.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0416.jpg
Next, I took the plunge to drill this part out so I can add lights to this part. I drilled it out, added some tubing to hold the leds, drilled a channel for the wires to run through, and added the front part to it. The front part fits so tight that I don't even think that I need to glue it. Which would probably help me to gain access to the leds if they burn out.

You guys rock. :)
Made a few other small changes. Drilled a hole all the way through this part so I can run a brass rod through it for support. I got the idea from Out of Times thread that was bumped the other day. :notworthy:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0430.jpg
I still need to add more support, but I will have to do that once I get more parts.
Next up is an example of what some heineken, a rotozip, resin, styrene, and bondo will do for you. The heineken being a major factor here. Everything sounds like a good idea after some heineken. ;)

A few more updates.
I drilled some holes in the back cockpit wall for the fiber-optics to run through.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0498.jpg
Then I made holes in the part that runs through the collar to match the ones I made in the above part.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0502.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0504.jpg
Then I put part of the cockpit together, made some holes for the fiber-optics, and primed it up dark grey.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0556.jpg
Next, after mocking this thing up this weekend, I figured that the brass rod that I ran through the center part would not be strong enough, so I drilled a larger whole, and put a steel rod in there.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0528.jpg
Then I drilled into the main wing for the support rod.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0533.jpg
The battery and switch for the fiber-optics fit into the rear cone.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0534-1.jpg
And the cone fits onto the back support plate.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0541.jpg
All the lower guns that I scratchbuilt sitting in thier support structure.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0549.jpg
And that part in its proper place (which I redid the rivet holes on).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0554.jpg
And part of it mocked up this weekend from borrowing parts from kits.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v291/teelasher/bee%20build/IMGP0525.jpg
This thing is frakking huge.
I was messing with the LEDs for the engines last night and I did not think that they were bright enough, so I ordered some different ones.

The wings are solid and the main wing is pretty heavy. All the reference I have shows the guns painted.

If you mean the detail at the tip of the cockpit pod's nose it was juat a rectangular block of material. It was on the master originall but I don't know why it's no longer there. I used a better pices of scrap from the spares bin on mine. There's a lot of the B-Wing's detailing that were a bit plain and crude which I embellished on the pattern. It has always been my philosophy that since these things aren't real you can't just ape a v/fx model that is seen whizzing by the screen, if there's areas that are lacking then it's my job to make it look better. In other words I reccommend that you just find something interesting and not worry too much about the studio part.

I got the idea to cut through that part from a guy on the RPF. He somehow managed to do it where he didn't have to rebuild anything on it. I on the other hand, seem to destroy things without even tyring. LOL So I figured if I had to rebuild, maybe somebody else would need to as well so I'm having Robert cast that little part so all somebody needs is styrene to rebuild it.
I'm going to try and hold the whole top part on with magnets.

Could that be me? :D And actually I did destroy the part on top, I simply scratched two copies from styrene and putty so its back is open as it should be. Looks much better IMO.
BTW did you have any contact to Jeff or Robert, I sent an email to Jeff about the replacement parts but - of course - no reply. Can“t continue the build...:(

I have a lot of progress on this build but I need to take more pics. I have a bunch of builds going on at once and it is getting a bit hectic around here. I also have family here for the next week and a half so I cannot pull kits because my shop shares a wall with the guest room (robert is pulling some molds for the b right now to help me out) so all I can do is build.
Here are a few teaser shots until later this week.

I was wondering how you achieved the different colours then noticed that the fibres are coloured. Great idea, although I've never seen those anywhere before. I might check out the garden lighting at the hardware store.
I also recall Bob mentioning using food colouring to tint the fibre ends.

Yeah, no problem. Just give me some time to figure out a better way to wire it. There is too many wires this way.

Get a set of Sharpies and just dab the fiber's tip at the light source. Coloring the fiber sides near the light source will give a softer version of the color.
After all these years, the BWing still gets no affection from me, but your build does it justice and some of the ideas here will apply greatly to other builds.
Thanks for sharing and congrats on a job being well done!

I will post the packaging and the website where the red LEDs came from tomorrow. I took pics of my builds tonight, but for some reason the LEDs escaped me. Sorry.

I still have to fill in the scribes that I messed up, rescribe those parts, flip them over and do the same.
I also had to rebuild a few of my lower guns due to me knocking them of while walking past them. I've learned to put things away properly now. LOL

That looks really good there TJ. I'd weather the ships separately. That would give each one a different character rather than having the same level and style of weathering. I like to think of the Rebel Fleet as being made up of ships from many different worlds, atmospheric conditions, service time, pilot carelessness and age. Each ship should look markedly different from another.
But that's just me.:)
BTW, I thought there was only one B wing miniature? Can you point out any decent references?

So I think that I have finished my graphics (took two nights). I took Guy's and did some of my own, then duplicated them way too many times so I could fill out a decal sheet and here it is. There should be more that what is needed for three b-wings plus extra decals for the imagination. Please feel free to use it, manipulate it...whatever. I'm happy to contribute. :D
I would print these decals out on regular paper and test fit them before printing on decal paper. The board doesn't support the newest version of word that I use, so if you need it on that format just PM me.

Not sure how to advise on weathering TJ, I still tend to just make it up as I go.
A lot of the weathering on the B's is age, I would use water colors or pastel dust mixed with water for the rust washes/patches, oils tend to dry more uniformed. When a stain on the model seems to have a line around its edge chances are its not oil paint. I've still never used enamel paint to stain things so I guess my advice might not be the best, but I did use enamel thinners & pastel dust on the probe droid to good effect. Most ILM painting is kinda basic but done in a brilliant way, I found the quicker something happens the more likely it will look ILM, if you try too hard you will be painting rather than weathering so practice on paper & try not to be too fine art about techniques if it looks right then thats all that matters, how & why dont matter. I always imagine them rushing to get the model ready for filming, maybe thats cos I'm always rushing :hammer:

I've watched this very carefully - I've got one of the kits. In fact, you answered my inquiry when I was looking for directions.
Your work is really excellent. Since there was so little screen time for this ship, almost any interpretation is kosher, but I believe you've really captured the look of the ILM models.

They come in the kit but I sanded mine down so that you can see thru the grilles so I could light it.

Guy, you are too kind. You set the bar really high on the paint for this model. I was just striving to come close to it.
Can I use those pics on another forum? That was really nice for you to do. Was it something that was really quick that I would be able to do in photoshop. I have photoshop but I'm not really good at it.

TJ, its really simple to do & takes seconds.
Open PS with the jpg's you want to adjust.
Top menu bar that has file, edit, image etc etc, click image, scroll down to adjustments then you will have a list of auto adjustments to choose from.
I tend to use auto color first, just click it & it will do the work. Then try auto contrast it may improve or it or may not. Use edit then undo to remove it if your not happy.
some shots work oh with just using auto levels butit can get the gamma wrong.
Then you will also see color balance. if you click on that it gives you the option of removing or adding basic color from the jpg, with yours they where quite yellow so I just removes a little yellow also. Then save.
It takes me 6 seconds to do a pic, if my computer didn't slow down when I load PS.
Give it a try, it makes a massive difference if your not happy with shots.
Your B deserves to look its best mate. it really really is stunning, and please feel free to use the the pics anywhere mate they're your pics.

I've been toying with the idea of a cylon tanker, but I'm not sure about it. Anywho.
I decided to make the V2 out of this one and it is by no means supposed to be screen accurate paint or detail, just like my V1. This is not SS and I love the idea that I can get the essence of the SS model and have fun with it.
Here is where I am at with the paint so far. The only weathering done is the paint chipping, so these colors will most likely change a lot before the build/paint is over with.
Here we go:

Paint Chipping.
My Mother-in-Law, who is an amazing painter, turned me onto a product that she uses on canvas for things like creating lightning. It can be purchased from Michaels and can be applied with the thinnest of brushes. Of course, you will have to clean the brush right away if you ever want to use it again.

Rub the product to remove:

Ha ha. When I was in the UK and Ireland I didn't get behind the wheel, thank god. I was a passenger a lot though and being on the other side of the road was fine for me, I got used to it pretty fast. It was coming out of the roundabouts that would freak me out. A question on the brass guns: did you buy a bag of random offcuts or get specific sizes? I can get big bags of brass tube from my LHS, so hopefully it will have the right lengths.
Mike

Yep, Right Hand Drive. :D
I took the guns that were provided with the kit to my local hobby store to match up the diameters on the tubing. I also got a few other smaller size tubes because I used reference pictures to build the guns instead of copying the the ones provided with the kit. <---Did that make sense? Sometimes things just sound better in my head.
Edit: I cut them to length myself.
