R L Bleecker
04-10-2008, 09:53 PM
Jeez...
Well no pix right this moment, but I'm doing the grunt-work of hollowing out the BobbyFett upgrade cockpit to accept F/O lighting since it's not the clear-cast resin one and getting ready to mate the hull-halves. I'm building the laser cannon at this time as well.
Since I've never lit one of these before, I'm working out the best assembly order that will allow max access to things. Fortunately guys like Greg and Jason have done this before, so I have some examples to follow. The big consideration here is how I'm going to break this down for shipping. As most folks know... I don't ship models in one piece. Because wiring is to be routed through the fuselage and wing blocks, I'm in the process of figuring out the best way of doing that, either by installing small Molex or MiniFit Jr connectors on the wires so they can be reconnected before final assembly by Jerry. The other alternative is to devise a way he can 'fish' the wires and LEDs up into the wings and engine cans and install them so that I don't have to do any sort of modification to the stock Hyperdyne wiring harness. The fewer solder joints/contacts/connectors the better for reliability.
In all other respects, she's going together as one would expect a good quality Salzo kit to go together.

R L Bleecker
04-12-2008, 10:49 AM
^ Thanks, Jerry!
Sure and go ahead. It's a simple technique that makes a big difference. Now a person won't have an easily identifiable point source... IE, it won't be OBVIOUS that there are LEDs in there and it gives things a bit more 'realism'.

Yeah. Had a bit of a snag with the F/O in the cockpit tub. Several strands broke off. That's a tough area to run optic to as there's not a lot of room to keep stress off the bends there. Minor frustration.

Well sonofabitch...
This is one of those times... and I go through this with EVERY X wing...
I'm frustrated... I've got paint adhesion problems... again. Even after the normal scrubbing and prep. Primer sticks well to some parts but doesn't stick for shit to the body or the wings. Goddammit. Like I said; three for three on the X wings with this problem.
So... about 2 days have just been lost while I strip this cocksucker and start again.
Some days I hate resin...
Kuhn Global
04-19-2008, 11:43 PM
Wow! Bummer! How did you solve that on 2 and 5 from before Bob? The paint on those is solid indeed!
R L Bleecker
04-20-2008, 12:00 AM
I solved the problem by stripping them with oven cleaner and washing them again.
Unfortunately there's just no predicting with resin when the paint will work and when it won't. It might pass the scratch test with your fingernails such as in this case and then lift right off with low-tack masking tape.

I have never had any paint lifting on resin. until i started building this red 5!
The nose cone peeled the fuselage and the wings in a horrible way, you could use your fingernail and pick it off!
So, i think i found a cure, besides the usual prep with mean green and westleys bleach white, i use exclusivley, the Floquil paints.
When it sticks, it wont come off, the bad is that its a bitch to pick with your knife, so other methods for paint chips will have to be utilized, and floquil paints arnt cheap.

I had this problem all the way through Chris' build up, hull was cool, but the wings, cans and guns were a pain in the butt,
I solved it by stripping and using a self etch primer, then hit it with matt black and gloss white, from there she seemed to tack well, and im anal on resin cleaning, i tend to go overboard so i never get this kind of problem.
Soapy wash and scrubbing brush, then VERY fine wire wool followed by and alcohol rub down, and it still peeled lol.
It funny, my own Hero was a beauty and never had any problems.
Good luck with her Bob, i know you will solve it!

You ever try a promotion adhesion spray, its used for autobody plastic parts but ive had great luck with it on resin, two light coats let dry and you can prime with no problems. it worked so good i got primer to stick on nylon and delron. and thats almost impossible. they sell it at NAPA auto parts and auto zone. its called gorilla grab. hope that helps.

it dries clear and completley flat. spray on let flash for 10 minutes and apply primer. it works really well i was surprised myself. i keep a can with my paints for those stubborn resin parts.

LOL!!!! No worries, Jerry. It's but a challenge to be overcome. As always, I'd rather find problems early on and solve them now rather than have the paint flake off or something on you after you've had your ship delivered.
I'm out to the stores today to get some of the stuff Al recommends and I'll give that a try. If nothing else, I've just learned a new technique that will be a lifesaver on projects to come!

Good questions...
How about the speakers in the background? I built those too. From scratch. Designed the boxes using Thiel/Small parameters and everything. Did those back in '92. Ordered the raw drivers from a company in Ohio. And then put the crossover networks on internal shock mounts so there were no vibrations. They still sound ay-yite after 16 years. But I did a crap green fleck-stone paint job on 'em!

Ah, speak for yourselves, I think the speakers look pretty damn cool too :D

Well, I wanted to make the enclosures a bass-reflex design, but in the interest of simplicity, I decided not to do the calculations for a tuned port and went with acoustic suspension instead. They're paired with a KLH 10" amplified sub anyway and so they work very well as satellites. But they're really damned efficient for being a sealed box, so I had to use equalization to match levels better between them and the sub.
Did I just hi-jack my own thread???

Thanks Al.
Oh yeah... IIRC, the mid/bass drivers are Pioneer 6.5" polypropylene. I chose those because they weigh less, are stiffer and stronger than paper and react faster to transients. The bass response is really quite good without a sub if you place them right. Even though the box design serves to damp the excursion somewhat, the woofers manage to throw quite well without cone breakup or distortion if you don't exceed the woofer's natural resonance frequency or have too much power. I have the specs on file somewhere as I was going to build more than one set, but never did.
The tweeters are Polydax polycarbonate domes.
Man... all this speaker talk makes me want to get back into THAT hobby sometime. I had a lot of fun with it.
But I suppose I should get this back on the subject of Red Five. No photo updates tonight, but I should be stuffing the electronics in there pretty soon, after most of the paint work is done, then I can mock it up and take some more complete pix of the ship.
Even though it's an older V2 and I've built two others, my approach to this one's construction and painting has been a little different out of necessity to incorporate the lighting.
In case you're wondering about Luke's head and helmet being different, well it's because it's not the stock X-pilot head sculpt. Jerry attached the head from an action figure I believe, to the Salzo X-pilot body. The helmet and goggles are removable. But I'll be adding a chin mic and a comline cord as I did with Kurt's pilots. One thing I like to do is make these cockpits and pilots as detailed as possible.

I'd be workin' right now. But the garage is pretty muggy. We've got some late summer heat going on for the next couple days. Up to 100 outside!
I check the work each day to make sure there are no resin troubles. Everything's A-ok. Any kit not in work is stored down in our basement where it's dark and 65 degrees.
I'm hoping to get some work done tonight once the sun goes down. Un-insulated garages are no fun to work in.

Thanks! I'm an old 'tronics Stuffer from WAYYY back... The biggest concern was routing wires without them being twisted or pinched or having strain on them of any kind and also fitting the circuit card AND battery in there, too. It really is a nice circuit and is well-made. They're spendy, but made of solid components with a good solder job. Saves me a lot of hassle. I should have a lot more room to work with in the V3 I'll be doing soon.
Damn thats a lot of wires!!
That's a really cool idea on the magnets dude!
I can't take credit for the magnets. A few of the other guys have used them to great effect. Allan Hansen ( Imaginager ) comes to mind on his TIE build. They work very well, though! I had to grind these flush because I didn't depth the holes as far as I needed to. This is the first build that I've had the opportunity to use 'em. I'm a convert!
Your a genius, I just wish I had the knowledge to do this kind of stuff. Absolutely top stuff, cant wait to see it all up & running.
I can't wait to have it all up and running, to tell you the truth! I'm not sure the 'genius' part applies, though. The circuit is pre-assembled and all soldering is done, though I had to cut the wires that lead to the S-foils and engines to facilitate shipping. I stripped and tinned the wire ends so they can be soldered together and I'll supply shrink tubing so that Jerry can do this up on his end. I'm going to try to use molex or minifit jr. pins and connectors on the next one so that the client can simply snap the harness together and fix the wings in place with little effort. It just takes a little patience to determine where and how to route the wires and come up with some kind of color-code so that nothing gets confused on re-assembly.
I've been following your Red 3 build and man, that paint job sure is coming along! Nice job on that!

Thanks Kurt and '79!
I can't take credit for the helmet paint job either. Jerry used a Salzo pilot body and took the head from a Luke Power of the Force pilot, I think.
The specific effect I'm going for and what Jerry has requested is as much of the full size set piece as possible regarding the cockpit.
Coincidentally, real-world aircraft instrument panels are lit very similarly to how this cockpit tub is done. Those panels are nothing more than acrylic which are blacked out, with silk-screened numbers and backlit with bulbs with colored lenses. For some of the different colors on the main panel, where a white LED was used, I simply applied red or yellow food coloring with a toothpick.
What's particularly effective is that Luke in low light, gets a little wash from reflected IP lighting. Enhances the scale effect and the reflected light is not overly bright or obnoxious.
Elkybaby

Way cool, that rear shot of the cockpit lit up could pass for a full size mockup if I didnt see the wires! well, at least in my opinion:grin: excellent piece.

Sometimes I'm slow, but I'm deliberate... I was sweating getting Artoo installed in his socket. I used NO fiber optics. Instead I made simple light-pipes from clear sprue ground to fit each opening in the dome, then used black hot glue to fix the LEDs in place and as light-blocking and to affix Artoo into the droid socket.
The wing blocks are epoxied in place... so now it's onto finishing the Foils and mounting the cannon and this one will be ready to ship!
I'll be starting a V3 pretty soon, but it won't be a Red Five. ;)

Thanks a lot, Mike.
I tell ya.... I always dread painting these things. There's an ever-increasing standard of excellence each time a new one is built up and shown ( by all the builders )... it really taxes my thinking abilities. But I learn something new or refine a technique every time. This is the first time I've used opaque hot glue in a build and it's strong, blocks light and sets like right now!

That's what scares me off building an X Wing: painting it accurately to the original. I'd be more comfortable doing an original scheme, which probably isn't a bad idea. Purple or Orange Squadron anyone?:p

Fantastic job on the lighting. Unfortunately that's one of my weak spots, I'm like an idiot when it comes to electronics.
The nice thing about using a lighting kit is that I didn't have to think or calculate or do much soldering. I just drilled, routed and stuffed and I think it's so much easier to light transparent or translucent resin than to run F/O if you don't have to...

Thanks Guy! Yes, my client has decided. I'll reveal his choice once I start the build. He made the decision in July and I've been excited about it since because it's not one I've done before.
To get the full-size look with the lighting, you just use an opaquing primer and paint, then use small drill bits where you want the lights to shine through. That way, you get consistent-sized buttons. The LEDs are installed DIRECTLY into the clear resin, then sealed with black hot-glue. It's actually pretty simple, but can be a tedious step for some.

No photo updates tonight because the next ones will be of it completed. I'm in the process of the last stages of weathering and fixing stuff I'm not satisfied with. But it shouldn't be long now.
It's kind of funny. The underside of the chassis is so beat, but the underside of the lower S-foils are pretty clean in comparison. I'd say that Luke's bird either had a wing-wash or there was some major swappage gone on before the battle of Yavin. I think the model shop said, 'Aw fuckit. It's done enough and has to be on the MOCO rig THIS afternoon! ' :D

Thing was... I didn't plan on the reflection in Luke's visor. But the way the lighting is set up... it looks almost film-ish... like right out of the trench run.
Sometimes a desk-lamp in a dark garage can give some intense shadows. I was just fighting under-exposure of the ship and over exposure of the lights. That's a tough balance to strike with a point-and-shoot digital with minimal user control on exposure time and shutter speed!

Me too. My kid brother used to smash all of my models that I didn't blow up myself. Now he's into Warhammer and a good model-builder in his own right. He assembles and paints all of his own armies AND builds his own castles and keeps. I'm proud of him! Today's his birthday, so I'd best not forget to call...

Thanks! I personally think a well-done cockpit is what adds to the realism of spacecraft or aircraft. I can picture myself sitting in there making the trench run, but I'd have probably done a Porkins... ouch...

I lost track of this thread 9 pages ago. But, uh... wow!
I used to think '300-something dollars for an x-wing? I dunno.'
But clearly this build is so way beyond 'an xwing' that it's something truly awe inspiring and makes me want to rob a bank right now.
Everyone's said it all before, so I'll just add 'Hell ya!'

Well, that dollar figure you quoted is just for the kit. Once you factor in extras like lighting and maybe paying someone to do one and then shipping, that dollar figure goes up radically.
But the upside is that you have more control over your desired product and have the ultimate say in how it's configured.
Thanks for the compliment, BTW!

Yah, I was not counting all the extra costs, especially any artist's well deserved time!. Whatever this build cost, it was money very well spent and highly earned on both party's part!
I had heard the kit itself is somewhere in the $300 range. And I would now want at least two. (Closed and open wings).
The electronics $ certainly adds up fast, but this is a perfect solution for avoiding FO, if I read rightly. I was looking at the cockpit going 'wow, he used so many diameters of FO!' But white glue blobbed behind the drill holes with some magic marker toning and a few good leds should do it just as well if not better than FO.
Over the last couple years, I've built up a good stock of leds, wire and all that voodoo. 4 leds in the engines, 3 or 5 in the cockpit and another 1 or 3 for R2?
I'm tagging this build for my eventual reference. Thanks for being so thorough, Bob!
R L Bleecker
09-16-2008, 11:14 PM
Thanks, t.
What you can't see is the light kit in action. But if you follow this link (http://www.hyperdynelabs.com/products_elec_modelLight.php) you can see the effects in action.
There are TWO LEDs per engine. One static red, and one a flicker. I tamed the flicker effect somewhat by mounting the blinking LED behind the static one coaxially.
There are 4 LEDs for the cockpit lighting and 4 for Artoo, so there are 16 LEDs total to achieve the effect I have on this build.
I recommend black hot glue and foil tape, just as was shown in the build diary. Those are cheap, fast and easy to use and stronger than white glue.

Just curious, why not black RTV?
R L Bleecker
09-17-2008, 09:44 PM
Why not? Because hot glue sets up and dries in minutes. When you do this type of work in a production environment, you don't want to wait for things to dry any slower than they have to.
With hot glue, I can finish assembling in minutes. RTV cure time is much longer. Also, hot glue is relatively inexpensive and is not as reactive chemically as RTV can be.

How does one get his hands on one of these kits?????
Well? I wish I had better news for you. This build was of the Salzo V2 kit. Salzo has since released a newer, more accurate V3 kit. However, it is no longer in production. The eFX X-wing is based off of the birds seen in the movies and even those have now ceased being sold..... since just last Saturday night! :alright:
If I may suggest? You may wish to contact Mike Salzo for an inquirey of where you may find a V3 kit, his email is salzo1@aol.com ;)
Other than that... just watch the "For Sale" section here and on other boards... and then there is eBay. ;) If so, be prepared to spend upward of $350 for a kit... and well over $1500 for any finished piece.
Good luck with your efforts my friend. :) I am certain you will find what you are looking for. :D

I still can't get over how awesome your work on the interior is.
R L Bleecker
01-08-2009, 10:50 AM
Thanks! Believe it or not, the glazing actually enhances the scale effect. I think if I were to build one of these for myself if I ever got the chance, I'd definitely glass in. It looks more realistic AND it keeps the dust off the pilot and the IP.
My client on this build specified that he wanted the cockpit as much like the full scale set piece as possible, and that's what I like, too... so it was no effort. It was the funnest part of this project.

01-08-2009, 10:55 AM
Oh boy... it was a mutherfukker keeping the fingerprints off while setting the styrene in place. Not to mention the lint... The watch crystal cement is what I recommend over everything else, even works on painted surfaces. It's a needle tip applicator, so you apply it with that, then you set the pane into the frame just like a glass installer sets a windshield. It's all pretty fragile, though... so it won't take much handling. When I packed it, I slipped a conical cardboard collar over the cockpit area, which also protects Artoo.

I can certainly believe it.
Though I've never glazed, on occasion when doing an airplane, I have found that once I add the clear canopy, it does seem to enhance the interior work. I reckon its got something to do with the way light and the slight magnification/distortion of the clear element reacts with everything, especially with colored dash board instruments and pilot flesh tones against the usual dark base of the interior. But that's on typical 1/72 fodder, so on this scale, I can imagine the optics it can make is especially astounding in the right hands, as unlike most jets, X-wings don't have the advantage of a curved canopy to support the effect and give it that -oomph- quality. Most excellent achievement Out of Time :D;)

Yeah, Rider... I used thermaform. It's very transparent in its natural sheet state and retains its transparency fairly well once formed as long as its not overheated. It's more optically clear and has fewer optical distortions than stock injection-molded canopies. It's great stuff. I'll have to replenish my stock. Last time I ordered any was 1991. It's finally running out.

JohnLogan, i have a few of those that were given to me by IBM to do CPU swaps. I almost chucked them the other day but glad i didn't now. Never even thought about using it for handling parts.Good stuff!!!
Hey OOT , are you using the .010" thermaform? I was thinking of using microscope slide glass but might give the styrene a stab. I love the glazing!!! Looks very clean and "finished". Where do you get the watch crystal cement? That would probably be the best thing even for real glass.

That just might be the ticket for some things. A toothpick with micro-liquitape also is good for manipulating difficult to handle stuff. For this, I just cleaned my fingers really well and handled by the edges and dropped it in place. I'll check out that tool though. Might be another good thing to have on the bench.

It's the .010, yes. Because we sometimes do clock repair and restorations ( though not in awhile ), we have stuff like ultrasonic cleaners and other things. The watch crystal cement was most likely ordered from Merritt's Antiques (http://www.merritts.com/store4/public/default.aspx) which specializes in clock parts and tools.
So the kit doesn't come with clear plastic for the cockpit?
