I'm planning a diorama of either a crash or maintenance scene. Which I do depends on how well I scratchbuild the landing gear.

Idea numero uno: Viper got trashed by Wolverine with 3 claw slashes everywhere and in the workshop for body works and a hot rod paint job.

2: Viper got dented by that careless Xwing driver while reversing. Viper dented panels being replaced in workshop and mechanic turned out to be a Vulcan.

3. Viper just going thru monthly maintenance by a crew of hot female mechanics.

Heh, seriously, I think maintenance is my preferred choice too! Man, those landing gears gotta be hugely tiny to work on! Looks good!

Is my hinge point correct?

The way to solve the problem of the hinge placement and canopy angle is to go to the end of the canopy back by the engine. If you place the hinge there then open the front as far as you can without touching the engine shroud you will be close to the correct angle.

Well, Jean-Pierre... the first thing you're gonna wanna do is git yerself some Dymo label tape and either a dental scribe, the back of a number 11 X-acto blade or plexiglass scoring tool. Now at ACE, where you work, you should have easy access to at least the last two. It's pretty easy. The safest option is the dental scribe.

Another trick is to use styrene stock to make a ridge behind where the panel came off, and drill the stock all the way aong(Maybe five or six holes in each line), to look like the internal frame that the panels are rivetted to.

This will be a real conversation piece, so it's best to add the little details if you can. A frame with holes would be a knockout blow of detail which will sell the scale!

Sure thing!
If you imagine a fighter jet with all the tightly fitted panels, well behind each access panel, there is a lip which the panel rests on(And usually, there is a skeleton of this framework, and that's almost all that the plane is, with panels on top!). And there is a row of rivets(Or other fixings), which are used to attach the panels on.
So, if you have a panel off, you really need to have a lip that the removed panel will rest on "When it's attached". And drilling the lip makes it look even more realistic.
Here are some images of real world aircraft with access panels removed(First one is the best, but the rest all show similar things):

Here in 'Murrica, you can sometimes get "old" dental tools for free from your dentists office, just for the asking. Most offices throw the old tools away or dispose of them as medical sharps waste - tho I don't think there's anything which requires that. A couple of fellas in the local model club have gotten them from their various dentists. Just ask and most times they'll give them to you for free.

I've gotten the dental clinic on-base to give me about two dozen tools in the past for free. I then give out these tools to friends and cohorts w/the caveat that if you ever decide you no longer want 'em to just GIVE them to someone else and not ask any money for them. I've still got 8 different dental tools - most are picks - that I use for various applications in modeling.

bar
04-10-2009, 06:58 AM
That's good too.
If you see the base dentist and he has an extra one, what you're looking for is a hooked scaler. You will NEVER find a scriber which matches it. I guarantee it.

Very good Jerry!
It's really come together nicely.
Now *all that is missing*(And i mean that in a nice way), is to take your pin vise with a drill that matches the holes you put in the visible framework, and put the corollary holes on EVERY panel. If you can, make sure the rivets on one panel, match the rivets on the opposite side of the panel gap. It makes sense if the panels you have removed have rivets/fasteners, the rest will too.
This type of thing:

Thanks for all the input Bar, but I don't really want to add anything to the outside surfaces of the panels.

You got me thinking though.

All the removed panels could have corresponding fasteners affixed to the inside surfaces. This could suggest a future technology not requiring a visible external part.

Mag-lock fasteners? Could be a problem when the battery goes flat- all the access panels would fall off!:D

Damn nice build going on there.

Since this thing can be completed in several sub-assemblies, I may be able to paint some of this soon. Anyone know what shades of gray I need? There's a pretty good selection of Testors paints I can get locally.

Well dude, when i've done my Vipers i've used a custom mix to get the colour i like.
Infact i couldn't get a colour i was happy with on my second Viper and ended up going back to the original mix i used on the first.Still had some left over and the paint codes and just matched it again.
Mine was Humbrol enamels satin white#130 and a satin grey#166.
I just matched it to my original mix like i said and i think it worked out ta three or four parts white to one part grey.

Hope that helps.

I was thinking of using gull gray on mine, as long as it's not too dark after weathering.

Nice touch with the salt there.
So what colour did you end up going with for the base,it look's pretty good?

Peagis

looks good, was wondering the same as wombat, what paint color did you use?

How does the 'salt' weathering work? I've seen it mentioned a few times and thought the effect would work great for the 1/6 Boba Fett i'm doing..

The way I understand it is this way... paint your metalic color on the model. Wet the area and sprinkle salt on it and let it dry. Then spray your base color over it and let it dry. Once dry, rub the salt off and there you have it.

As for the salt, I have heard of using table salt to sea salt.

Table salt, just as described above. While it's wet you can move the crystals around. Oh, and I used Testors Camo Gray and I think it's Italian red.
