Well after been outa the building mood for a bit i've finally got back ta having some fun.Got this bird a few weeks ago and decided ta make a start.
Have mainly been working an idea for the lighting of the kit.My original idea i had was ta use the plug that i'm using to mount and feed the power for the lights and to mount it in the balance point.Well my female plug is too long ta mount it at that point so i've gone the closest i can ta that point and will have ta add ballast ta the back to get it balanced up again for the stand.
Ground out some channels ta run the wires from the plug ta the engine cans.
So this is what i've done so far and i think it should work out ok?
Well hopefully!
Wings are pinned and i've got my pair of 3/16 solid rods going through both rear engine halves and into the forward fuselage to give it some strength. The front of this baby is pretty heavy compared ta the rear as a lot of that is hollow.
But i think these rods should hold it together pretty well.
Gee it's another fine kit from Mike, this really is outstanding castings!!
I just love the rear cans on this thing!!
Thrown in a pic with the old under size SS Viper, theres a bit of difference!

Thanks mate,i got the idea from something i seen here on the board by a fellow member.Thats just one of the great things i love about the place.Theres so much awesome building here from people that have such creative skills it's hard not ta pick up an idea or two.
I found out about rare earth magnets also from one of OOT's builds as well and they worked on the Raider for the battery cover.
Always learning, not saying i can do it but it's always good seeing how the top model builders go about thing.

I'll be checking this out in person very soon. Man, that thing is hella nice.
Phil has also said that I can have his old Viper now that he has a better one to park on the launch rail. Thanks Phil!:p
We really must kick some ass at next year's model show Phil, with a studio scale display. 2 Raiders, 2 Vipers, Colonial Movers (and little brother RTF ship), B wing and a Galactica. Hell, let's throw in your 20 foot Saturn 5 and freak out all the armour modellers!:D
Get building. I can offer some advice if you want to fibre optic that cockpit?

Looking good, i will be starting the instructions for this tomorrow but Phil is right on track with what i have in mind, it really should be a very easy kit to put together....even with the lights.
I have been toying around with making a hollow bottom base with the eagle(like on the full size helmet) available, it would allow you to hide a battery and a switch in the hollow bottom of the base, unlike the Raider, the viper does not have lend itself as well to an internal battery that can be easily accessed for replacement...

Ya know, for a brief moment i thought about some kind of lighting for the cockpit. So yeah,i'll be interested ta see what ya think i can do with it then.again i have an idea but not really sure it doable though.

Mike,theres no pressure dude!!
Most of it is cleaned up (the little that it requires) and in primer now.
Just finished puttying and sanding what i'm guessing are seam marks from the casting on the front fuselage.
Thats washed and ready for the primer tomoz.
Should get the wiring run for the lights and the holes cut out for the reflectors and that rear section glued together tomorrow also?
So it's going pretty straight forward at the moment but there are a few bits here that i have no clue where they go.So i'm a lil hesitant ta glue a lot together till i see Mike's instructions.

Ok,heres where it's at tonight.
The wiring and plug are fitted and the rear cans have the holes in em for the reflectors.
I wont fit them reflectors till after the painting is done.
All three parts are now glued together and i'll fix up some lil gaps with a bit of gap filling CA tomorrow.Everything is in white primer and i applied a wash to some of the bit's.Sorta a pre shade before the colour goes on i guess.
So thats where it's at,not sure what i'll get done after work during the week but we'll see how it goes.
I also have just about finished the Raider at last, thanks ta Mike Salzo for supplying me some more decals.
Now,can someone perhaps Mike or GG tell me where these bit's go?

Hey Phil, those parts in the big pic, the little tank tracks are optional if you want to put them on the inside of the side (not top) intakes, right around the inner lip on the sides, i will show this in the instructions in the next day or so, they were on at least some of the filming models. The squares, again are optional if you want them, they were used as mount covers on the filming model and would go infront of the canopy inbetween the "rails" use the one with small spacers for that, and on the bottom directly under where the top cover would go.
Again, I consider these optional, but i think they look cool...
thanks

Well after achieving very little during the week here is where i'm at with it tonight!
The lil tracks and impellers have been added to the intakes and is now basicly ready for the base colour. The rear cans i sprayed with a dark copper and will mask them for the paint job.The lights work just fine and i like the effect!
I still need ta see how the lil u channel bits go when Mike gets to them in the instructions and fit those last parts to the rear but after they are fitted it's off ta the paint shop!

Not much to show but this is the base colour.
Well actually it's the second attempt!
and i'm still not that happy with it!!
It's a mix of white, royal light grey and deck tan.
The first paint had too much of a tan appearence in it so i basicly just added some more white to the brew.
But a good wash and some weathering will change that appearence!;)
Or i'll be painting it for a third time!!:alright:
Fingers crossed aye!

So in a couple of days i'll do some masking and see how them orange markings go.
79 daytona
12-11-2008, 11:21 AM
That looks pretty damn close Phil i like it.
My choice of colour will be the blue grey used on US naval fighters such as the F-14.
Wombat
12-13-2008, 02:00 AM
Thanks Mark.
Well i eneded up not being that positive on that colour so i sprayed it again with the base colour used on the other viper i did.
Still had some of that custom mix colour left over and mixed a lil more up to match pretty closely.
I guess it's not much different ta what i had but least this way i believe i should be able ta get a result like the other i did.
It sure looks different without the weathering on it though.
Only thing is this stuff is enamel so the drying time is longer than with my acrylics that i normally would use.
But i guess that gives me time ta paint the figure up now.;)

^ That's pretty close to what I came up with for a base color, which I'm shooting next door in the dining room right now! I've converted the table to an emergency winter workbench... My base color is lighter than radome tan and a tad more tan than dove gray.
So far the painting is going a hell of a lot faster.

Thats good news then,i just checked out your thread and they look PFG there as well!
I guess i should have just painted this bird in that enamel ta start with instead of trying ta get something the same in an acrylic.Ended up wasting three days there and now it'll be next week before i start getting the markings on.
But the figure is turning out all right so far.

Thanks ta Darth Duck for some modeling tip booklets, one of which was weathering tips.It shows a paint chip effect using salt and i tried it out for the first time.
Might have gone a lil overboard but hey this isn't being done to replicate any particular Viper so i feel it'll fun weathering one up my way.
The stripes also on the wings i have done at this angle as i see i've seen a few pic's of the Viper with this sorta angle rather than follow the wing edge angle.

All the markings are on now although i still may just touch up a couple of them before i start the weathering.
More salt chip effect was done ta the grey bands that run around the engines and also the last orange markings that went on the bottom.
Pilot, cockpit and canopy are just sitting there and i'll glue them bits in after the weathering and dull coat has been done.
So a day or two for these enamel paints ta dry, then it's weathering time.
