View Full Version : Colonial Movers: almost there!

I've been a little hesitant about showing my work here due to the sheer talent of you guys, but I'm really happy how this project is turning out!

After more than four years in the drydock, I'm getting excited at the prospect of finally finishing this model. I had a productive weekend at the bench, painting and weathering the last container, masking and painting the white lettering, building the container mounts, deeply cutting my finger and actually gluing the containers on. Whew!

It's been great fun attacking the containers with sandpaper, hobby knife, Dremel, soldering iron and weathering pastels. Dirty models are definitely easier to paint.

Only a few greeblies to source and glue on the front antenna and three rear comm dishes. Once it's all together, a final dirty-down and decals. She's about 3.5 feet long with an aluminium armature and is quite heavy with many resin castings.

I'm particularly happy because this project was also to help me learn resin casting and weathering for other in-the-works studio scale models. I'm stoked!

Sorry about the crappy pics; my digi cam was set on low-res and I hate flash photography, but you'll get the idea. I hope you likey. A messy bench is a productive bench, right? Wink

You're far too modest.

I'm sorry though but I look at those pictures of the Colonial mover and all I see is that amazing looking WIP Galactica behind it.

I want to see more of that!

Thanks guys! I'm getting excited at actually finishing something for a change. I'm having so much fun building the Movers that I don't really want the process to end.

The Galactica body was built in 1999. Only a few more grand and a few thousand hours to go....
Donations and kit IDs gladly accepted. Help!:love4:

By your command, O brother in the sand.....:alright: Sorry about the quality- low quality setting, low light pics. I hate using the flash! I'll add more pics as I get closer to finishing the model.

Thanks Jim. You got me started in all of this, remember? It keeps me out of trouble and at home on the bench some of the time. Nikki is forever grateful! Yes, the trick to having a professional-looking model shop is to have as many boxes, shelving and tools in the photo as possible, right?:p

One little matter, I'm having trouble getting the front antenna arrangement correct from the blurry ref. pics I have. I have scratchbuilt the antenna itself, but how it attaches to the parts I'm not sure about. Anyone able to help out?

Thank you kindly, Mike! I can see those and they're most inspiring! I can't wait to see this thing completed! Makes me want to finish my lil' bitty Alliance Models kit at some point in the not-too-distant future. Mind terribly if I use your buildup here as reference? That and perhaps I'll ask Mr. Creveling if I might use his, as well. You've both done some fantastic work.

Thanks again for the pics! I gotta live vicariously thru you guys 'til I get back home.

Just imagine when he gets his Galactica done! We'll all be droolin' again!

Wish I had the room to build one of those big suckers! Instead, I have to deal w/the R-M kit. Or at least 'til TimeSlip Creations releases his accurate resin version in the same scale - along with a whole host of other ships, to include a TNS Galactica. They'll all go nicely with the Fantastic Plastic Pegasus kit, as well.

Getting there! Thanks to a good friend, the model now has the custom 'Movers' decals applied. A few more greeblies and decals to go and she's done. Yikes, I just realised that this has been a four or five year project. Studio scale is definitely not for the impatient, but the results are definitely worth it.
The Movers will sit there as long as management allows it.:alright:

Reminds me of a really good TINS tale but it is WAAAY beyond the scope of this thread.

'Plucked it right off the screen' - that is a perfect way to describe this ship.

Here's an idea - those trailer boxes - or similar - can still be found. The center 'rod' holding everything together can be made with little difficulty.

What if someone could make and sell casts of the other odd parts - such as the fore and aft sections and assorted greeblies?

It could be a 'sub kit' of sorts... and make building a SS Colonial Movers ship much easier to do?

LastBattlestar
02-03-2008, 07:31 AM
Thanks guys. I missed your replies as I didn't have this thread on 'email notification'.:D

The Movers could be kitted, in theory. You need 5 Saturn V second stage end caps, 2 second stage collars, various Sat V third stage shells, four Leopold railgun halves and the containers for the basic kit parts. The command, centre module and backbone are just plastic pipe (EMS on original I think).

Those parts would get you a basic Movers kit. It's not hard to greeble up the rest using kit parts and lots of Evergreen styrene strips.

I'm not sure what is next on my list, apart from the Galactica. I really need to get more done on it, as it's the sort of project that you can spend 3 hours on and not even notice the difference. Just like last night's session. I glued on a few hundred tiny styrene squares and you can barely notice 'em:(

I haven't researched it at all, but I'm keen to build a Livery Ship sometime. If I can ID the film cans, I could look into a build. It's heavily greeblied, but I'm not too fussed on super accurate detail. That's what I said about the Movers and Galactica once upon a time.:D
Maybe someone will help out with decent ref. pics....:book1:

Wow, nearly a year since I updated this thread.

I was playing around with the camera on my B wing project and thought I'd drop in a pic of the Movers as she looks today. It's waiting on decals and is probably 85% correctly detailed, but I'm happy with that for now.

I'm going to cast another central module armature plug to neaten up the mounting point, but overall it's one of my favourite builds so far. It's always a great conversation piece- everyone remembers the 'We Move Anywhere' ship from TOS Galactica. One day I'll finish it.:)

Heh, not too close now, but thanks Guy! My fine detail work isn't up to fine scrutiny yet, but she looks nice to the casual observer. Probably as good as the original FX model!:D

It does have a spine/ container misalignment problem which I need to fix. IF I can get the plastic tube de-bonded and twist it round a bit. Five of the containers are castings I made, so they're not as sharp as kit parts. But it does have character, which I enjoy in a model.

Not to steal anything from Mike, but a quick introduction here. My name's Dave, and I've been following Mike's progress on this as I worked on my own Colonial Movers. I'm modeling the version shown in TNS, so it'll be a bit different than Mike's. Hopefully mine will look half as good as his!

I've just picked up working on it after a second tour in Afghanistan, but I'm definitely making some progress. Here in the next few days I'll slap what I have together and start a new post. Anyway, thank you all for the warm welcome here, and i look forward to any and all input and criticism.

Thanks guys, but I really must stress that it's my original model being reworked with sharper scratched detail, new armature/corrected pipe sleeve backbone and accurate kit part detail. My good buddy Phil (Wombat) took on the challenge a few years back as he had completed his own super accurate Movers and wanted to fix mine. But then he decided to build a studio scale Galactica and Shuttle, I went full on into Galactica rework mode and the little Movers was forgotten about.

I guess I can now let the cat out of the bag and say that the pic of my Movers in pieces was staged just to keep everyone guessing. Sorry about the several year wait.:D

Anyway, here's the latest pic from Phil's kitchen and she's looking SWEET!

:wtf:

http://www.resinilluminati.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=61240&stc=1&d=1353759281

Tamiya white primer going on. This is also the base colour, weathering straight over it gives a nice on-screen look without dulling the model down in grey.:)

http://www.resinilluminati.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=61241&stc=1&d=1353759281

Now for a ton of weathering, washes and pastels to really dirty it up. I've also cast and built up two new containers as two were really quite distorted making it hard to line them up on the ship.

Thanks again to Phil for rebuilding this model. He went way above and beyond the call of duty on this and I'm really happy with the results. I think he took pity on my first attempt after building his own multi-trophy winner a while back and I thought he'd just give mine a little tidy up. But that went out the window with a new welded armature, spine pipe work, new resin cast parts (THANKS Shadownight!), accurized kit parts, magnetized container mounts, aligning shims on the armature, the list goes on and on!

Thanks Phil!:hail:

Say Lee, would you mind if I use your cockpit figures idea? I know it's a little uncool of me to copy your idea, but it's just too good to not add to mine!

Hah, don't worry, Phil's super careful when transporting things in the ute. Items are padded, packed and strapped down, safe and sound. i think it's cool that we only build models that are large enough to need a large vehicle to be carried around in.:D

Nice to see you here mate, we have quite a few Strailyins on RI, SSModelers and the 1999 forums!

Hi Movers lovers, time for an update. It feels good to have this project underway again. It's another long term build, nearly nine years if my calculations are correct. Yep, another one.:D

I've been taking my time with the weathering as after the incredible job that Wombat did with the engineering and rework, I don't want to disappoint him and frak it up! I've looked at a lot of reference pics of the original and other people's builds and it was very difficult to decide to go heavy or light with the weathering. The original is very heavily weathered, but on screen looks plain white under all that bright studio lighting. I went with option A as it's a lot more fun to really beat it up with grime and rust.:-)

I've cast and constructed two new exterior post containers to replace the warped yellow and brown ones and fitted them with magnets. Getting the yellow colour correct to my eye resulted in a lot of wasted paint! I'm now waiting on a couple of sets of studio scale decals from JT Graphics to put on before much more weathering can continue. I'll keep ya posted!

Thanks for the feedback guys. Still not sure if I'm going too heavy on the weathering, but Dullcote might tone it down a little.

Yeah, I love Phil's Ute too! It's got the Aussie-only quad cam Boss 5.4 litRE engine and is a hell of a lot of fun.:D Funny how Ford US won't let them sell over there, I wonder why...The tub is removable and can be replaced with a tray for more serious loads, but over here, most of them are used as sports cars with ridiculous power outputs! Most of them seem to have bikes or jet skis in tow. This is an 04 or 05 model, the newer model has the supercharged 5 litre Miami V8, with a conservative 400hp. Lots of fun with the Falcon car chassis and light rear end.:)

God forbid, Ford USA might actually sell a boatload of them on the west coast or states like Florida.

They wouldn't sell as well here in the Northeast US due to the bad winters, so the only ones they'd sell to around these parts would be the "Gearheads".

But that's the point, isn't it?! :D

Christ it's like bloody Top Gear .........Nah - they're not getting enough stick from a Clarkson-esque member! Blimey, Phil, that ute really is full-on Aussie, isn't it! ;)

LOL!:D We do love our utes. Sharing their sedan sibling chassis, front half and drivetrains, they HANDLE too, not like those clunky 4WDs. Mind you, the Toyota Hilux is often the best selling vehicle from month to month and those crappy pretend mid sized SUV aren't far behind. Not my cup of tea.

Anyway....the decals from JT Graphics arrrived today, less than 2 weeks from the US. They are beautifully printed and have a great colour decal location guide featuring Sean Sides' Movers. Very nice. I ordered two sets in case of accidents, highly likely with my vast decalling experience.:p

Ninja decided to check out da merch. Must have been some American air in the bag, she didn't know what to make of them!

Does anyone know if Dullcote can be used for the decal base layer? The instructions say to use a gloss coat, but I'm wondering?

I love the look of this ship and you've more than done it justice.
We have a big Aussie removals company here in London it would look good on a colonial container.

Hah! I do have a couple of spare containers now, so maybe Southern Cross Movers?:D I have some more cargo ideas in mind, just gotta get Christmas out of the way and get back to the bench.

I can't wait to get the Movers flying back in formation with this!

Mike it looks great. What are the containers you are using on this build.

LastBattlestar

You need five AMT 1/43 exterior post vans and one Reefer kit for this build. My post vans are all resin castings though, not quite as sharp as original kits, but I think they suit the battered look of the ship.

Sorry I haven't posted at BYC for a while, mate. I really must update things over there.:)
