View Full Version : Stop Motion Luke on Tauntaun Replica. Finished pics

I have recently decided to treat myself to a very special piece for my collection. I've commissioned a replica of the Luke on Tauntaun stop motion puppet from The empire Strikes back. A lot of great people here had helped me out & given great support & advice. I have eventually decided to go with one person to do the hole project for me.

It wont be an uber replica but it has a high budget in my opinion & will look pretty damn nice when finished. It will be fully posable with the exception of the mouth & fingers. The Taun is 14 inch tall & the Luke will be 9 inch tall. Both will have detail from the minature & the full scale prop so it will be a slight hybrid of the two. My intension is to have an amazing & unique piece for display. The Armature is 90% completed for the Taun & the sculpt will be starting next week. There is a possibility of a small run of 10 of these when it is completed but they wont be a kit or cheap.

Thanks guy's, I do have to say I have put an amazing amount of time & research into this project. I have spoken with oscar winers & taxidermists alike to work out the best way to do this on a budget that isn't too high but decent enough to get a fantastic prop replica. I can say that I'm hoping to have it in hand by late Jan when I meet the artist in LA. The guy who is making this for me has worked on films like Titanic & starship Troopers & he's in the VFX industry. The armature has been made by Tom Brierton, I dont know if anyone is familiar with this guy but he has wrote many books on the art of Armature design (a bit of a legend). A few people already have expressed interest in weather this will be made available. At the moment it is a one off piece for myself but when it is completed & the guy is happy with the process involved to get it to a standard I'm happy with then & only then will we consider making a few more. I am investing a lot into this project & promise to update as soon as I have anything new. I am like a kid at Xmas with this & buzzing about the progress. It has only taken a month from me starting to get a working armature, not bad!

Incredible sculpt! Beautiful. Will this be molded and cast in foam latex?

Guy Cowen
12-05-2008, 06:52 AM
It will be some kind of foam latex, not dead certain what type as the sculptor has complete control of how it will be made (not my forte). It will be fully posable & the head will be a separate piece from the body. Rich I promise this will be a great piece when done, my guy is a seriously talented bloke & is loving this project.

since these shots of the revised Armature where taken the head has been repositioned back & lower & the body clay sculpt has started. The dark spots on the head are from the oven. The hips & shoulders have been narrowed slightly & the spine extended. I'm hoping to have the an update on Monday of the full Taun sculpt

your correct its 1/8th scale or aprox 1/7.5 scale ish.

It would need Luke to be a bit taller in real life to be 1/8 scale so maybe he was taller than 5'8"?:alright: :p:grin:

Well I got to say the work being done to produce this masterpiece just goes from strength to strength. The claying up of the molds has begone & although I am no expert on this process my guy is copying every part of the making of the molds as per the original molds to ensure it is a total replica in all ways.

The plaster work should be starting at the weekend.
Its hard for me to get on line at the mo as I'm on a round the world trip so I will update when I can. I'm in Sydney today & my brain is very mashed from jet lag.

I wish I could stay  I'm only here for a few days then over to Melbourne for a couple. I just came from Japan so my head is spinning right now & I'm already sun burnt . Off to LA & Mexico next then NY & home to the UK for a week of sleep :D.

Here is a quote from the sculptor to explain the mold making process

"The process is pretty straightforward, it's just tedious, time-consuming work that takes a lot of patience and a steady hand. The clay walls going around the sculpture is the separation line between the mold sections and this is going to be a 3 piece mold. There will be a section for the underbelly and inside of the legs and arms and then the other 2 sections will be what is left which is what the flat walls separate, the outer two halves which include the outer body, neck, head, and tail."

Another quick update.

The first wall of plastering is done & the second starts today, it is a long process as each coat is left to dry before the next coat is added. This adds strength to the mold & also hemp is added to the later coats to add strength also. The first coat is a very thin wet coat also.

http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f157/saberjunky/DSC00829.jpg

I must say, as jim is using very traditional methods with this it has a real vintage feel to it already. The patience involved is immense to get this done to the standard thats been achieved, not too long now before the first cast is done.

Just got these sent through this morning. Its the first test with clothing that I have seen. This is just loose cut & by know means finished but its more to see what looks right. The head will be lowered slightly on the armature as well when it is cast & completed. As with the taun the Luke head will be resin to retain the detail longer. The Jacket material is pretty close I think, once it is stitched & tidy + weathering & some snow I reckon it will damn close. What do people think so far?

After quite a lot of debate we have now decided to cast both the Luke & Taun in silicone instead of latex, it will give the piece a much longer life span. Big updates coming soon. The luke molds are done & hopefully the first batch of silicone will arrive today so the 2 will be together for the first time next week. Fur tests start now & hoping to have the fur patterns by the end of the week.

The Luke has been more trouble than originally thought though, the latex cast was not going to stand the tests of time & the silicone cast was to brittle. Jim then tried a similar technique to what Rich has been doing with the Slave 1, by brushing in latex to for a skin over the silicone. This again was not good enough as the latex skin wasn't strong enough. Jim has decided to combine all the best parts of each process & make the ultimate Luke stop mo puppet. The head, gloves & boots will be resin (for longevity & a superior paint job & look) the body will be a silicone cast & the clothes will now be cloth not latex.
I never for one minute thought that it would need this much development but Jim is a Legend & you don't become a Legend by cutting corners. The end result is about 2-3 weeks away now, which for me will feel like a lifetime but to see it all saddled up & ready for action will be incredible. This all started for me last October & I think you'll agree it has been an amazing thing to see come together. I never doubted that it would happen but I just didn't know how at the time. Here are plenty of pics of the Luke mock up that I was sent whilst on vacation last week.

Ok guys, I have decided to show an in progress shot I just cant hold back any longer, so far the Taun has all the pelts on bar a few small area's. The pelts are false fur, the tests turned out way better than the real fur, they have been rubberized with silicone in just the same way as the original so they strech with the movement. The pelts are glued with silicone glue so there is no stitching needed. The fur was more grey to start so Jim has whitened it & treated it to make it look more coarse. He is still working on it so this isnt the finished article but he is close. This pic doesn't do it any justice as it was a quick point & press shot just for an update for me the muscle detail doesn't come through as well in this shot & the face detail is a bit washed out but I think you get the idea? All honest opinions are more than welcome but as far as I am concerned I am over the moon so far.

Here is the new improved Luke, rather than a silicone body we have gone for stuffed material it has a much closer feel to the original & vastly improved articulation. The head hands & boots are all painted resin so should stand the test of time better. The suit still needs coloring (grey) & weathering. The green for the googles & blaster & saber to be added then it just a case of tarting up, weathering & harness & Taun hands. Its getting really close to completion now.

Well, what can I say....its all done & dusted I just got the first pics of the first completed Studio scale replica of Luke on his Tauntaun. I never ever thought I'd see the day this would happen, its taken 11 months to get this far & I am so so so over the moon with the results. It could've gone a bit toy like in some hands or a bit model like in others but Jim for me has recreated the look & feel of the stop motion replica to a T. Its never going to be identical as its not like kit bashing but I doubt I will ever see a better version in my lifetime. I will be adding the weathering & snow to mine when it arrives & I cant wait for the day it does. As i always said it was a hybrid of the stop mo & the full scale taun. I could've really really gone over the top on the material's used & many other aspects but to do this for $2500 per unit was incredible in my eye's. They have already been valued at $4000 - $5000 by Jim VFX budy's. so this was one hell of a bargain for me. As it was to have been a one off piece for my own collection & that it has become a run of around 15 or so then I have lost my unique piece, however I will be getting my unique piece back in a few months time, when Han & his Taun arrive.
