View Full Version : All New SS TOS VIPER PATTERN, 15 1/2 inches completly scratchbuilt new pattern.

Well this one has been in the works for a while now and should be done by the end of the week, big thanks to Mike Reis who worked on this pattern with me, he created the files and had RP work done on the intakes and back thrusters and a couple of other parts. Jesse Meyers for his help, and guys like Mark D, who are always an insperation when it comes to BSG stuff, and lots of my other buddies who are always keeping me going on this stuff....Now the story.....

This is an all new, completly scratchbuilt pattern (no parts used from the ICONS or any other original casting) for the Studio Scale TOS BSG Viper. It comes in at 15 1/2 inches long, which is 10 percent bigger than any kit that can be traced back to a casting of an original Viper (ICONS, Custom Replics, MIM etc). All parts have been sized up to match the proportions of the original filming model as closely as possible, and is much cleaner and than any previous kit offering (no more squished engine tubes!!). The afterburners, and intakes were RP'd from Mikes files and closely match the filming model.

I will be posting more pics soon, and in the interest of full disclosure i will tell you that there were some small liberties taken in making this pattern, mostly in the interest of straightening things out that needed to be straightened out from the filming model, or in the interest of molding and casting. A few greeblies needed to be scratchbuilt, and also there are going to be some optional add on part in the way of turbo fans and afterburner plates. I will get into the exact details of all of this as the thread goes on but the important part of the new pattern is that it is proportionally correct to the filming model, and sized correctly, something that to my knowlege has not been offered in a SS Viper kit before, and what my goal with this project was........enjoy

Keep in mind that for these pics the Viper is just cobbled together with some double sided tape so everything is not 100% straight or where it needs to be i just wanted to get an idea of how it all looked together, not all parts are present in pics, also note that the comparision shot is with a JM Cumstom Replicas Viper.

quick look at some of the smaller parts, the cannons have built in vent sprue at the top, they will need to be cut at the cannon nozzle. Landing gear bay doors will be cast seperatly from the body, as will the end cap, which will allow for it to be used as a mounting cover. Also pictured is the afterburner can cap, also will be cast seperate to allow for easy lighting, the afterburner plate will be cast clear. The afterburner plate and the turbo fan are optional "non cannon" parts.

I have started to make molds for the wings and other small parts as i complete them, with a little luck i should have a full set of molds by this time next week......
thanks

Well i am a couple of days behind where i thought i would be but i should have a set of molds for early next week, I am just doing all the fit checks, and final small details. here is a peak at the intake cluster, this will slide onto the fuselage nice and snug, then the engine cluster will attach to what you see here, afterburner cans to that, then on the bottom the "tray" with the 4 rails will be cast seperate and hide all the seams underneath....

Now that Mike S. has posted some pics of the complete kit I hope it's OK to post some pics of the the history and Build-up behind this Kit. just in-case anyone is interested.

I want to thank Mike Salzo and Jesse Meyer for letting me help contribute to this project.
With out sounding too " musshy"....
It was a great honor for me to get work on a project with the likes of Mike and Jesse both of whom have well deserved reputations of excellence and talent in this "Crazy" "Studio Scale" modeling genre.

I also want to apologize for being the source of much of the delay in the release of this project. As they say:" Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans" ;) Mike, You've been most patient.

Ok on with the pics...

Here's a "quicky" crude render of the new afterburners with the inner, "brass" tube and their new dimensions
These stereo-lithograph files were "grown" with Invison3D Printing/Raprid-protoyping.

greeble_gremlin
09-29-2008, 08:21 PM
Here are some pics of the actural RP'd afterburners, before they have received final "finishing" and their primer coat
Sorry for the fuzzy quality I took these with my Cell

The smaller primer-ed one is sized for Jesse's kit, and is there for size comparison
The 3rd picture also feature the smaller Afterburners I originally made back in 2005 for modifying Jesse's excellent Viper Kit. They served as "prototypes" for this new version.

For the studio scale "purists":
The original AfterBurners were fabricated using the 1/72 Hasegawa Leopold rail-gun kit. This gave each afterburner 81 ridges.
The ones I created have 80 ridges which divides itself more "neatly/ideally" on the cardinal points of symmetry. Also, the "Diamond" details that interrupt the ridges are not "skewed" and un-even as they would be, using the original kit-bash parts but are "idealized" and symmetrical. The details is also a little more "crisp" and defined.
We feel we maintained the intended "Character" of the original After-Burners without any of the flaws.

The Inner rim also emulates the original brass "inner" cylinder that the TOS filming miniature had; housing the lights used for engine glow effects.

greeble_gremlin
09-29-2008, 08:41 PM
Here are some pics of the "finsihed" Afterburner "Cans" before I sent them off to Mike
You can see the original kit-bash component along-side for comparison

Also the slightly smaller AB-Can was made to fit Jesse's Viper kit offering.

Thanks,
M

Ok Hope this isn't too much info for you guys.
Whenever I see someone else's build-up on a cool subject (and there have been many here!)
I can never get enough info on what went into to making it...
so here we go...

These are the Afterburner "Burner-Plates"
Strictly speaking these parts are not "Cannon" to the TOS Viper.
-They are included as an "optional" part should anyone wish to include them in their build-up.

-The kit was made to facilitate Lighting should anyone wish to do so.
Mike Salzo will provide these parts cast in Clear resin if you request this option.
(at least that's the plan for now.)

This picture follow the process of modeling in 3D in the computer, to Rapid-Prototyping the components, and final “finishing” and assembly.
With the “final finish” the RP parts look as if the were made by “analog" means… but, of course are very precise in shape and detail.

greeble_gremlin
09-29-2008, 08:58 PM
A word about the After-burner Plates.
Early on in the project Mike and I asked around and took an informal survey...

Whether or the inside of the intakes should feature a Hemispherical shape similar to Jesse's kit and the Revel/Monogram styrene kit or a Burner-Plate like those of actual jet aircraft.

The majority of you "Hard-Core" modelers wanted the Burner-Plate so that's what we went with. It is loosely based on the Burners found in an F-15 Eagle

greeble_gremlin
09-29-2008, 09:05 PM
OK here are some pictures of the Intakes. They were also "grown" from 3D/CAD files.

A lot of effort went into creating the contours of the original intakes without any of the distortions.
Both the Port and Starboard intakes are perfectly symmetrical (for example).

-Not featured in these picture are small greeble details that Mike S. will add to the "Inner Lip" of the intakes.
Most people are un-aware of these "greebles" as they were often in shadow when the Miniatures were filmed on screen.
We tried very hard to get all of the details "right" on this baby!
I'm glad Mike and Jesse have very high standards.

A note about the Turbo-fans.:
This is another "Optional" part that, Strictly speaking is not "Cannon".
If you studio scale "purists" don't like it ... then don't glue it on! -Now, wasn't that easy (just kidding) ;)

To answer your question Dontexist... regarding the source of greebles

I hope I not speaking out of turn (for Mike Salzo) when I say all the details of the Back Greeble-Plate between the Afterburners are 100% .
Mike Salzo used all of the original Kit-bash donor-parts. (see the pics below)

In the original Viper Filming miniature there are distortions in the casting. The Cylindrical shape that makes up the Core of the engines is "Squished" . When looking "sqaure-on" from the back they are slightly Oval. Also the 3 engine cylinders did not remain truly parallel when cast; they "pigeon-toed" together or "taper" as they reach the the back.

In this Kit offering they are parallel The Afterburners are not Cut or interrupted to make room for the Mounting point as in the ILM/Apogee Model (see pics below)
These means the greebles were not quite as "crowded". Mike had to use his best artistic judgement for the placement of these parts.
I think he "Chose Wisely!"
All-in-all this Model will be a lot "Cleaner" and "Crisper" in the details than the filming miniature.

Also thanks to Rob, Gary, Andrew C., and GKFX for some of the reference pics below.
(hope it was OK with you guys to re-post these)

OK, I am happy to say Mike S. has been way too busy poring molds of this sweet bird. There has been much sincere interest.
Mike said it would be OK for me to post some more pictures of this kit offering just in case any of you would like to see more.

The first is a layout shot of all the New TOS Viper Kit components.

This isn't a review of this kit since I helped work on this too --I'm a bit biased. However this is the first time I got to see the entire kit first-hand and "in the flesh" so to speak.
All I can say is WOW! The details are so crisp and sharp!
Mike also did a great job of engineering this kit. The parts fit together very well; nice an snug where they should be.

My next impression was How big this sucker is!
Anyone who is familiar with Jesse's Viper kit will be similarly impressed. This "beastie" is about 10-15% bigger. I'm not "slighting" Jesse's Kit; it's excellant too... and has a direct lineage to the original Studio Miniature. I have a prime spot on my shelf proudly displaying his kit.
Jesse helped and collaborated on this version of the Colonial Viper too. Without his help we could never have produced this offering.

Here are some pics showing the fine details richly reproduced.

I hope you find these Pictures useful,

Update for you guys waiting on kits, i am just waiting on the reflectors for the light kits to come in, they have been on backorder until yesterday, hopefully i will have them in a day or two and will be able to ship out all orders within a week. If they are not here in a day or so i will ship out the kits without them and forward them to people once they are in.
thanks
mike

Right now it looks like i will only be take orders up till this weekend, then the cold sets in and i will be closing up for the winter, but i hope to be back with this in the spring, so if you want one get in touch with me in the next couple of days....

Another update, the reflectors for the light kit are not coming as expected so i will be shipping all the kits over the next week and then forwarding the reflectors once i get them. All current orders are cast, and i will be shipping between 3-4 a day starting tomorrow...
thanks
mike

Ok, I know Im gonna get flamed for suggesting this in a forum where there are so many SS modelers but I have to ask... is there ANY way, you guys can do this again in 1/72 scale? Please?
Theres only one kit in that scale and Im not impressed with it, plus I think its too small. Closer to 1/87 I think.
I just need a worthwhile kit to sit with SciHighs awesome MK2 and Mk7 kits.

Mike,

Contact me.

We have plenty of RTV and can pound these out for you during your cold season at a reasonable production cost. Besides, I really want one.

Seriously...

...I'll front the lay-up or inject your molds if still good.

To all involved, ABSOL-FREAKEN-TASTIC!

Hi Cokefiend,

Funny you should mention a 1/72 scale version of the TOS Viper....
It looks as if one may be in the works. The philosophy behind the build would be the same as this new SS TOS Viper.
The beauty of the 3D/CAD parts I fabricated is they can easily be re-scaled and rapid-prototyped again in any size / scale you want. The same is true for any Laser-cut/etched components.
There may be an accurate 1/48 scale planned too. The would also have recessed panel lines not "raised" lines as in the Styrene Kits

If you are in a big hurry and need it absolutely right-a-way You may want to try the JoyRide Viper. With a little re-working and a new paint-job the would look pretty good. Joyride Studios basically copied and re-scaled the Revel/Monogram kit as the basis for their version.
So it has the same inaccuracies as the 1/32 Styrene Kit but those can be corrected.

Hope this helps,
Mike

Thanks for the kind words Jim.
Considering the caliber of work coming from your studios; that is good praise indeed!

I wish you guys were still located in El Segundo... that's my home town

man, I miss the palm trees and the beach.... sigh ...'especially this time of year when winter is on it's way.

I am shipping out the last kits of the kits this week and will likely get started on instructions the week of Thanksgiving, i am still waiting on reflectors for the light kit, which will be forwarded to anyone who got a light kit as soon as i get them. But i do need the reflectors for my build with lights for the instructions, so that may delay the start of instructions..
thanks

Just got mine. Couldn't be happier. :) The casting is practically flawless. I have not test fitted anything but I'm sure this will take little to no work to build compared to Jesse's kit which required a lot of customizing.

Is there a parts list of set of instructions?

Thanks, it looks like i should have my full order of reflectors for lighting tomorrow or tuesday, i was waiting on those to start the instructions so i will get started in the next few days, i will post and email the instructions when they are done.

I will be forwarding the reflectors to everyone that needs them starting after i get them in hand.
thanks
