View Full Version : 1/72 scale Naboo Starship build up
Here's one of my Naboo Starship's I'm making for a client. I could never get the paint to look more than just shiny silver, so I decided to do it the way ILM did the studio model, with chrome mylar applied with a heat gun and iron.I had to cut the mylar into separate panels etc. to follow the contour of the hull.
(sorry for camera phone pics)

Does the mylar have a heat activated adhesive on the back or is the adhesive something you have to apply seperately?

That is MAJOR COOL !!!!!!!!! Awesome job there

Yes it's heat activated, and it's a pain in the ass, that's a whole days work right there.

I can imagine it's an exhausting pia, but, honestly, the results are stunning and only add to your fantastic body of work and skills :yeah::yeah::yeah::D
Thanks. This stuff shows even the smallest piece of dust. So I had to wet sand, and wet sand and wet sand, then use fine steel wool, then I use a tack cloth before I put down each panel.
Here's a closer view.

OMG! :eek::eek:
Are you planning any weathering techniques over the mylar? You'd probably want this to look as pristine as possible but I'm wondering what techniques would work for this material. Clear coating might destroy the finish.
No new progress today, but I wanted to show some better pics.

Are you using Top Flite Monokote or Hangar 9 Chrome? That stuff is hard to get right, and I ought to know.
Looks 100% better than 3M Spray adhesive and Cooking Foil.
There's a company in Knoxville that makes a chrome paint for airbrush, but the effect only looks 'right' under lexan car bodies.
Seriously, man. That's bitchin'!

REL,

A study model/maquette was made so the animators could see how light reflected off it. I'm not sure if it was laser scanned to build the computer model or not though.

Also, the model appeared to be vacu-plated. I didn't see any seams, bubbles, or tape pulling up.

Carol Bauman (ILM MOdel Maker) at WF a few years ago was talking about this model and how they used Mylar for it. She said it was a real bitch to do.
REL: That looks amazing. Is that mylar some kind of stuff for RC planes?
