View Full Version : Possible Star Destroyer variant...

So I'm currently toying with the idea of a deck through carrier/star destroyer after being inspired by Out Of Time's own variant, so blame him, lol....

I'm still working on the design, but so far, said model would be 25" x 14".

At the moment, I'm very pleased with the overall shape. I"m going to build a mock-up in 3DS Max to see where I want to go with it....

First though I need to finish my Corsair, lol.

Hey, thanks man!

That's okay, I've got greeblies coming out of ears!

What sparked the idea was looking at OOT's build, then as I was rummaging though the storage area at work, I found a plethora of old circuits, rectangular chips, etc... good side trench detail. Plus the plastic totes of crap I have at home, my wife might actually be pleased when I tell her that I'm using the shit up.

I also have access to a rather large supply of scrap plexi, so why not?

Hey, Carlos, the more the merrier! Mine technically isn't a variant of the SD, though it obviously comes from the same shipyards and design houses. It's MUCH smaller than a Destroyer and much less heavily armed, which is why I call it a Cutter. By Imperial standards, it's tiny; only around 2500 ft in length more or less.

Yours... about how big will it be ( 'real world' ) and how will it compare to the Devastator/Avenger types?

Scorpius
02-25-2008, 05:22 PM
Thanks guys!

I'd envision it as somewhere in between your Cutter and the normal Star Destroyer....

If a SD is typically 6 miles long, this would probably fit in at around 4. I haven't exactly worked out the math that far yet, for the time being I'm playing with shapes.... You never know, I may end up turning this into some behemoth of a battlecruiser... My first idea was that the space in between the front "mandibles" for lack of a better term, would serve as the entrance to the carrier decks, but what if I toy with the idea of putting some real big frickin canon or mass-driver there or something, ala Narn cruiser, lol.....

I've attached some very quick renders of what I have so far, which is devoid of a superstructure yet.

Dang Carlos!!! That didn't take you long at all!

NIIIIIIICE!!!

BTW.... the length of an Imperial class SD (like the Avenger) is 1600 meters according to the new cut-away book release of all six movies (Star Wars - Complete Cross Sections). It made GREAT sense so this is what we are using to determine size relevance to each other. Converting down to inches, and using the future 4 foot (48 inch) Avenger project as 1600 meters,... if Bob's were real life, then his would measure 900 meters at 27 inches. ;) I also have another planned in the near future of the fan designes VICEROY class....measuring 1700 meters and actually being 51 inches in length. ;)

Now... an SSD (The Executor)???? I would need a HUGE facility to place that to scale with the others! LOLOLOLOLOL

I REALLY like this new class you have made! What do you call it again? And, what are the chances of making it available? Even as a mesh to have parts printed? ;)

Kurt, the model currently measures 27.25" x 14" overall, putting it at about 1/2500 scale or 1700 meters in real life. It will look positively sick next to my itty bitty Enterprise-A, lol! Can you say big shumbitch!? :D

I'm still leaning toward making this a carrier-type ship. I wasn't planning on kitting it, as I don't want to deal with the expense at the moment, however when my plans are complete, maybe I will build 2 at once....? Also once drawings are finalized, I could do a detailed mesh that you could use.... I eat, sleep and breathe 3DS Max. :)

I think I'll call this a Medusa-class Carrier.

Once I finish the drawings, I'll make a template for the 4 hull wedges out of MDF and use that to rout plexi copies. It's easy, quick and accurate. Once the internal structure and provisions for lighting are accounted for, it's just a matter of doing the rest.

Excellent Carlos!!! This design almost BEGS to be done in large scale! ;) Since I am eventually having another fan design built that is stated as 1700 meters actual length, then another would be kewl to consider with the same length measurements! :)

I like it. Medusa Class Carrier. Nice. :D

That one looks good, but i think yours looks more menacing with the wedge shape instead of a rounded one, it looks a bit Star Trekish in my opinion, too many curves and too many colors.

Okay, I finished the wireframe version and used that as a template to create a new version in Max from the ground up. She's still devoid of detail though.

I'm satisfied with everything except for the look of the front carrier deck. I'm still not quite sure how to approach that have it still look like a star wars vehicle.

I gots an idea, how about the top and the bottom of the hull open from the superstructure forward on the top and from the reactor forward, so your fightercraft can go up or down, sorta see through hull, and keep the nose pointy?

Interesting, if I am imagining it as you describe. Sort of like 2 very large open bays... pointy nose.... Very interesting. I'll mess around with that idea as well, thanks!

Scorpius
02-29-2008, 02:35 PM
You know what Apophis, I like your idea better. The upper/lower bays would be connected via a series of doors on a common bulkhead, some open, some closed. At an angle, you'd be able to see clear through the ship. Plus, I'd be able to tie my 2 side bays into it. There would be 4 large seperate, but interconnected hangars.

I LOVE IT! :D Think of the detailing and lighting options. Excellent idea!

New length of the model is 31". She's somewhere around 2000m.

Apophis
02-29-2008, 04:01 PM
Your welcome!
Now that is gonna look cool! I cant wait to see some renders!
The bays are all lit up and you can see ALL of the ties "hanging".
You could really detail the inside of the hull, there would be several "decks" showing, when you look inside, and all of your landing craft and shuttles could be on the outside hangers.
The larger ships like the Falcon or RBR could be in the aft hanger, facing the superstructure, with the magnetic field around the hanger?
All kinds of options.

Scorpius
02-29-2008, 08:25 PM
Gents, thanks very much!

Final size is 31" x 14", 1/2500 scale. The real ship would be 1,968.5 meters.

I have just about all the drawings done that I need, so I can start construction. I'm holding off on the next version of the digital model so I can concentrate on fabrication drawings. This Sunday I'll go into work early to utilize my shop and some scrap materials, which are plenty. I'm excited about this project. I haven't done any studio scale stuff since college, which was a decade ago. I've gotten sidetracked here and there, but scratchbuilding sci-fi is my first love, along with armor that is.....They compete in my brain for 1st place.

Nothing fancy so far... I've got the hull wedges cut out. They need some minor filing in places, and I'm working on the upper hangar bay. The photos came out a bit blurry, but I was in a hurry at the time.

I'm also going to build a couple of smaller escort craft too to go with the hangar bays. Probably a Flurry and a Hyperspace Marauder.

My next step is to build up the structural framework on the hangar sidewalls. At work I was rooting around in the storage area, and I found a butt load of ancient circuit board parts that will come in handy for building the Tie bays and other details of the waistband parts. They are cool, I'll have to take photos..... Then I'm going to start on the lower hangar bay which is similar but about twice as deep as the upper one. the two will be joined in the hull through a series of rather large blast doors. I'm going to build up the hangar detail in layers, and I need to go to the hobby shop to get some small scale trussing from Plastruct. After that I'll start working on the hull.

Now I've got to go back to the shipyard and work on her. :)

Gentlemen!

I actually felt well enough today to cut some styrene for this beast! Monday I have to go back to work reluctantly after 2.5 weeks of bed-rest, so I hope to knock out some serious work on this over the next few days.

While bed-ridden, I had plenty of time to plan out my next project, which will be a 1/24 version of this craft below that Talen so kindly posted in the Star Wars section. I'm also thinking about kitting a smaller version of it, say 1/48 scale. Mine will look largely the same, but many of the details will change. I don't like the flat bottom or the guns underneath, which IMO make it look like a toy. The top of the cone section will have a gun turret. I'm also doing something different with the engines. The creator of this design classified it as a bomber, but I'm going to create an interceptor/ patrol gunboat version of it. See the link below.

http://www.resinilluminati.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=7710&d=1206255138

So that is the update for now. I hope to have pics by Sunday. Also I will try to find the time to work on Mike/Last Battlestar's CD cover.

LOL, Possibly! I agree, I'd like to kit it in 1/24. It depends on how much I can invest in it. First I've got to get through this Star Destroyer. :D

I'm trying to concentrate on the job at hand, but when you get an idea that becomes obsessive, especially when stuck in bed for a few weeks, it ends up being all you can think about. :D

By all means, please continue with the SD. It is better to do one kit at a time, so that it has your undivided attention.

Is this craft a clone wars bomber by any chance? It looks to have a similar engine configuration as the Radiant VII and chancelor Palpatines shuttle.

Ya know come to think about it, it would look much sleeker and fighter like w/o the bottom guns, just make it smooth.
Also, on a side note, the craft has inkings of the Y-wing in its elements. For instance, the engines have the vectoring vanes, the ion cannon on top, the canopy is close, and it has a place to put the R2 unit. I will have to study it a bit more to see if there are anymore similarities.

Talen found the renderings at sci-fi meshes website. I think it is meant to present a clone wars/republic bomber. I also picked up on the extension of the basic Y-wing layout. I'm working on some stuff now and will show a few quickie renderings tomorrow. ;)

Hi guys!

Just a real quick update.

I am no longer employed. I imploded on Monday afternoon at work, which was my first day back to work after surgery. It was ugly. My entire department pretty much told the Vice President of Education and Programming to "go fuck herself" and we all walked. Let's just say that she fucked up, and there will be lasting repercussions for her from this. 5 people under her "leadership" quit in the last week. She'll be lucky to have a job at all within the next few days, along with our pathetic CEO.

So my efforts now are mostly focused on the job hunt. I'm still working on the Star Destroyer as time permits, but I've been pretty busy as you can imagine. This project though is important to beef up my portfolio. I'll pop in here and there and post pics when I can, but my time at RI right now will unfortunately have to be curtailed a bit.

Best wishes to you all! Many thanks for your friendship.

Thanks Apophis. When I started this I was originally going to build 2 at the same time, but that didn't pan out, so she's one of her kind.

I'm working on the Mercury capsule by day and this by night. I'll have pics of both tomorrow. I've got some rubber molds done and I have a few more to go. Before I get much further though I have to start shopping around for LEDs. I am going to see about getting a decent Xmas set or possibly just making a wire harness. I have to save $$$ wherever possible.

Here's some photos of some molds. I have a few more to go.

Here's the main engine mold. The top half can also double as a KTM original #4 butt plug.

Thanks gentlemens.

I've ordered some pre-wired 12v LEDs this morning, so I am waiting for those. I'm going to be casting more greeblies and starting to detail the Bridge and work on the superstructure. The fun never ends, eh? I may take photos later if I get the chance. I have to take my son to the dentist.

I got my LEDs from BestHongKong today. I have to get a 12v power supply. I haven't had time to do any work on her all week with my daughter sick and sleep deprivation. Just pure exhaustion. I've gotta kick the Mercury kit into high gear, so progress will be slow on this. I did start detailing the bridge though last week.

We had to buy a new phone for the house, so the old one kindly donated it's 12v power supply and associated jack for this project. I may actually do some work on her tonight, as I've been jonesing. Things are crazy hectic around here these days.

Test fitting of various parts in progress. You can see how the 4 bays will interconnect. Still forever and a day to go..... I want it to be purrrfect.

Hey guys.

No no recent updates, although I plan on working on it today. I had to take a couple of days away from modeling after finishing the Mercury. The only things I've done was disassemble it and removed the mile of tape holding it together, and see those cardboard boxes in the photos above? I had to empty those onto the table to organize and find things, that took awhile LOL.

Jeff, those aren't film they are cpu parts I found at my last job in storage. I just had to acquire them. ;)

The lower bay is nearly complete and will be ready for installation soon. I have some more minor detailing to do to it, and to frame out the opening on the bottom of the ship. Then I can plan the lateral bays. If I get the chance soon (which is doubtful!) I'll be working on the rest of the superstructure.
