I'm working on the Alliance 1:677 scale USS Dauntless. I like the design and it is a nice model. My goal with this kit was to replicate the apperance of the digital ship from the show.
To do this I applied small pieces of tape to the model and then sprayed it with a coat of paint. I did this 4 times each with a different color.
I have attached pictures of the model and my refrence shots. I think I've come pretty close, but what do you guys think?
I think it looks great, that's how I would've done it, in fact that's pretty much the only way to get that look, so you nailed it as far as that goes.
That's a nice ship too, I like the design.
Looking good, Scott!
It's just the right look.
This is my second favorite Trek ship after the NX-01.
Good work!

Not having this kit, I can't say for sure, but it appears that the surface is not smooth. Reminds me of the Ertl Enterprises post Smoothie. Is this the case?
Having done quite a bit of this "paneling", after studying the CG renders, you might try making (2) masks. One, just a square, the other a big, fat, plus sign, approximately the same size as the square, maybe a bit smaller. If you study the CG renders, the pattern is alternated all over the surface. Quite literally "cut and paste" by the folks at Foundation. Alternate a lighter background square with the darker plus sign, and vice versa. By doing this contiguously all over the surface, you will get the desired effect. Make sure to overlap these sections and don't make them "opaque". You are looking for a transparent effect. Much like a watercolorist paints. Doing this method actually makes the painting go quite fast with an airbrush. It doesn't have to be meticulous. Just the opposite is true. "Quick and dirty" all over the surface will get you where you want to go, and it will not look quick and dirty when you are done. Try practicing on an extra piece of styrene or page of paper before you begin, to get the hang of it. :icon_thumleft:

This is one that would be KILLER kit done in large scale! At least in 1/350 to go along with Voyager! ;) Wait a minute! Is the Monogram Voyager 1/350?
Anyway.... duuuuuuude.... I am already drooling to see your progress photos!

Thanks for the kind words guys!
The kit is almost done. I hope to get decals on it tomorrow. Oh and this kit is in scale with the Monogram Voyager.

OK, I have one last question. What type of finish should I apply to this model? I finished the decals last night. For some reason I want to finish this thing with a semi-gloss. Opinions?

Definitely a satin. Glossy would make it look like a toy.
