I'm very pleased to announce that I've been commissioned by Kurt to build a scaled-up version of my 7" scratchbuilt 'Persistent'-class cutter. The new ship will be a 'Block 2: Mod 1' version of the study model and will be the lead ship in a new sub-class. The name of the ship? ' Incumbent '. Her mission? Suppression of enemy communications and defense systems.... jamming, in other words!

Since this is my own design based largely on the Ralph McQuarrie/Joe Johnston concept art for the Super Star Destroyer, I have some leeway to have a bit of fun! There are no plans for a kit; this will be a one-off. Thanks goes to Kurt, because this is an unusual commission, as it's a non-canon custom work, which is something he normally hasn't commissioned to date.

For those who have not seen the study model, here are a few images to give you an idea of what the new, scaled up version will approximate. The Incumbent will be 27" in length overall and will be made of sheet acrylic, sheet styrene, wood and metal and yes... it will be lit! The study model is to scale with the 1:4222 ERTL destroyer.

This is going to be SWEEEEEEEEEET!

I am VERY excited about this one Bob! :D

So... this one will be in scale with the future 4 foot Avenger SD that Richard will be doing after the 1701D. That makes it...what?.... about 27 inches long?

Oh yeah! This will be one to watch indeed! :D :cool::cool:

Thank you my friend! :D

R L Bleecker

^ Yep... 27 inches. So it's a little better than half the mass of a Destroyer. By Imperial capital ship standards, it's small. But its presence is quite large, because nobody sees it and the ships it protects coming. Too much electronic gibberish and too many false targets being generated. And it can work in concert with her sister ships to create a whole net of electronic suppression and can hand off jamming assignments between each ship to increase the confusion for the enemy side.

Her mission is directly based on the mission of the real life US Navy EA-6B Prowler.

Summary of the EA-6B Prowler's role in warfare. (http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/systems/aircraft/ea-6.htm)

Then there's the RC-12 (http://www.fas.org/irp/program/collect/guardrail.htm)...

R L Bleecker
01-24-2008, 01:12 PM
RC-12 is an ESM aircraft, rather than a jammer. ESM is Electronic Support Measures. Her mission is one of ELINT or Electronic Intelligence gathering. The Incumbent performs this role as well as active ECM ( Electronic Countermeasures ).

The EA-6B is the ONLY airborne tactical jamming platform used by our D.O.D. I only know this because... I used to troubleshoot, repair and maintain some of the countermeasures systems while I was in the USN.

Kylwell
01-24-2008, 01:24 PM
You know, I didn't know that. From my quick dig the AF just bolts a jamming pod on and hopes for the best, like the AN/ALQ-184.

R L Bleecker
01-24-2008, 01:30 PM
The Air Force now flies the Prowler along with the Navy after the EF-111B was retired. The latest version of the AN/ALQ-99 is the primary system.

They still bolt on pods and hope for the best ( not much hoping really, because this system is versatile and very powerful), but the Prowler carries 3 pods ( The other two out of the five wing stations are for drop tanks ) , configured for a variety of jamming scenarios.

The ALQ-99 is a much more sophisticated system than the ALQ-184. The 184 is pretty specific to its role within its role. The ALQ-99 is configurable depending on the band(s) of the spectrum that need to be jammed in the threat environment that planners expect to encounter.

howsabout the Growler is it in service yet? will the USAF use it also?

'Growler' ( I hate the name )... won't be in service until about 2018. I imagine the USAF will use it as well, since versatile interbranch airframes seems to be the trend now. The AN/ALQ-99 ICAP III upgrade to the Prowler fleet was scheduled to begin around 2005. That's probably done by now. There's life in those old airframes yet.

'Growler', for those who don't know, is yet another modification of the F/A-18 airframe.

Kylwell
01-26-2008, 10:42 PM
2018? With the Prowler starting decommissioning in 2010?

F/A-18G "Growler"
The EA-6B will begin retirement in the 2010 timeframe, after a career that exceeded 40 years of deployments in support of USN, USMC, and USAF strike forces. As of early 2000, Defense Department planning for replacing the EA-6B Prowler include a scheme under which the Navy would buy an F/A-18G "Growler" -- an F/A-18E/F modified for escort and close-in jamming. The Air Force would provide standoff jamming with modified EB-52s or EB-1s, and close-in jamming with unmanned air vehicles such as the Northrop Grumman Global Hawk or General Atomics Predator.

R L Bleecker
01-26-2008, 10:49 PM
Here's the thing with defense planning. One never knows the exact dates. My info might be kind of old. Even with a phase-out beginning in 2010, it'll take a few years for every squadron-USN, USMC and USAF to fully eliminate these from the inventory. Congress could also change its mind and decide the Prowler can remain operational for awhile longer depending on funding priorities. But I think since the Prowler hasn't been in production since about 1992, those aging airframes are going to be the deciding factor in bringing the Electric Hornets online. It just depends on the material condition of the remaining existing airframes ( about 120 ).

But hey... what do I know. I was only part of the community for 5 years.

Kylwell
01-26-2008, 11:01 PM
No, no, you're correct. Hell the B2 was cancelled a record 13 times and it's mission statement changed just about every time. A10's were scheduled to be canned then proved thier worth so they got an extension. Yeah, Gowler's (not fond of that either) could be operational by 2010 or they could be put off 'til 2018 because somebody's district would suffer if the Prowler's stopped existing.

I chuckled when some congressman said the F35 was going to be the last fighter in the US inventory. I remember when the 104 was going to be the last fighter and everything was going to be missiles after that. Or when the Navy/AF went all missiles and no guns because no one would be dogfighting anymore.

About the only thing I think I can guarantee is that what ever a congressman says will not be the way it happens.

But back to models....

Kewel! I remember that lil' model! Who put it out, again?

Nobody. It was me. The model is one of a kind... a kitbash/scratch.

Can't wait to see this one progress. What scale does that make it, BTW?

Not sure. Whatever scale REL's upcoming SD is going to be. The large version of this will be scaled with that.

REL
01-27-2008, 02:27 PM
Mine will be half ss scale at 4'.

R L Bleecker
01-27-2008, 02:34 PM
Right. I think Griff was asking what the model scale would be. The original study model of mine was 1:4222... same as the ERTL... which was what... 18" ?

So, I'm thinking somewhere in the neighborhood of 1:1000, just on simple mental math.

REL
01-27-2008, 02:38 PM
So these will be 1/1000? Now that has some cool possibilities for cross universe dio's with broken and crushed 1/1000 Star Trek ships strewn about as we know they would be if they went up against Star Destroyers.:D

R L Bleecker
01-27-2008, 03:42 PM
I don't know if they'll be 1:1000 for sure. Probably in that neighborhood, though. Just as a guess, that seems about right... but a bit large.

But... if 18" = 1:4222 then 48" = about 1:1600 if my math is correct.

Pretty darned close!

The smaller model scales out to the following for a "real" Incumbent-class using 7" as the starting length: Length: 2,462.83' / 750.62m

So, at 27" long it scales to 1/1095! Close enough for most folks to 1/1000 scale!

Thanks guys. What's not evident in the pic and probably won't be until some primer is on is that some of those chips have chips of their own glued on top of them! This is multi-level detailing and then there's still some kitbashing to do. I've got a Flak 38 I'm culling some parts from. Great stuff, indeed... armor.

Tomorrow I have to go replenish my supply of epoxy and then get a roll or two of metal tape. I decided that tape on the inside is the way to go for opacity. I don't want to shoot very many layers of paint to block the light, because having multiple paint layers will start to obscure all this detail and make it all look 'soft'.

R L Bleecker
05-19-2008, 03:19 PM
They were designed to run on AC. Even if I dissect that light string, I still have to figure out the resistor value I need for each LED. And not knowing the current-handling specs of those LEDs, it makes that hard to calculate.

I was looking for those strings that run on DC, but couldn't find any. This is a bad time of year.... so I'm back to square one in soldering up something. I have a request out for some LEDS and resistors. I should have those in a day or two.

I think the key to interesting detailing is all about relationships between the parts used. Say part A is glued next to part B if they are related or having a working partnership, a interesting linkage part is needed to tie them together. The part that physicaly ties them together usualy becomes more interesting than the two parts it's joining.

If your using a part to stand alone thats fine, but it should be very interesting so that when looking at it, it has a strong sense of importance on it's own. Sometimes if your going to have a stand alone part, stacking smaller parts on top will also make it very interesting.

I think you have some good parts here Bob maybe tie some of them together, to make it pop a little more?

Michael

THIS beastie is one that has been consistently placed toward the rear, however, Bob and I have now agreed it should be done by that end of January 2009. It should be quite the site when complete. I have been drooling over this project since Bob's tiny original build of his PERSISTANT. :D

On the study model, I just ID'ed my first kit pieces ever! Wow! That sensation of ' Hey... I know that piece!' is a strange one! The rebel laser turrets from the AT AT kit and a Veritech laser rifle! Nice uses! I always wondered what kinds of pieces people use on kit bashes, and here I have the very same ones. Nothing exotic at all. (though I'm sure many of the other hundred kit parts are more exotic)

nice job!

R L Bleecker
12-10-2008, 05:25 PM
Well.... a couple of the circumstances with this model is that I've relocated my shop twice in the last year, 3 times in the last 2 years total. This project was affected by the two recent moves. There are a few things I'm reworking on this one. I also recently purchased the lights for it. Lighting plan should be relatively simple with about 10 or 12 white LEDs to light the whole thing. Three for the engines.

The relocations caused some damage to what was already built, so these areas have to be repaired and/or partially rebuilt before I can proceed. The basic shell and armature are just fine though.

I understand.

What's going on with this piece is that it's on the underside of the rear part of the sail that hangs out over the engine cluster, so you're not seeing this assembly in 'context'. You're seeing it by itself in the view that I posted and that can influence how the detailing is perceived. In other words, it'll tie into the rest of the ship pretty well once it's installed.

Yeah... That was one of the changes I felt needed to be made... a sleeker, more proportional design. The original maquette was just something I scratched up for the heck of it, but then Kurt had the idea that a larger one would be something he wanted to see AND have. I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. Almost no bad angles to this design in my opinion.

It is good to see you back at this one, Bob.

Thanks Jon. It's the oldest job still on the books. Going on 2 years now...

:wtf::wtf::wtf:Where did this come from? Whatever! Niice, very nice indeed Bob.

Jason... it came out of storage! In reality, it's based on an early concept for the Super Star Destroyer... I just modified it and shrunk it down and then gave it an electronic warfare mission. I have plans to do another someday based on this basic hull, but with a more standard superstructure ( no overhang to the rear, but still with the bridge wings forward) minus all the ECM gear.

Hey, thanks guys! I'm turning and burning on this one. Doing mostly chip work on the bottom now. With any luck, I'm on track to have the bottom plates on this thing sometime today with black paint on the whole thing... then the fun of chasing down light-leaks begins...and after that... I get the fun of getting the white paint on, touching up and finishing up. I anticipate being done on or around the first of Feb... which makes this about a 2 year project off and on. yikes...

Thanks, Road Warrior. Interesting you mention Devastator. That was about the level of detail I was shooting for, also accounting for the fact this vessel class is much smaller than an ISD I or II.
